Description of the group of helminths

Tape helminths (cestodes) can reach a length of 70 cm. Individuals can simultaneously produce male and female sex cells. The body consists of numerous segments. When ripe, the segments can detach and independently exist in the host's body.

Before entering the cat's body, helminths need an intermediate host, which is lice and fleas. In their body, the larva matures to the cysticercoid stage. If a healthy cat swallows cysticercoids, then maturation occurs in its intestines to an adult.

When the animal begins to lick its fur, it can swallow the infected flea. Therefore, simultaneously with deworming, therapy is carried out aimed at removing fleas.

Consequences of helminthiasis

Tapeworms in cats can cause serious illness.

Diphyllobothriasis. The disease is caused by long helminths of the genus diphyllobotrium (broad tapeworm), reaching 1-2 meters. Cat helminths can live for several months. In the human body, it can exist for up to 20 years.

Symptoms of the disease include disorders of the nervous system. The cat becomes irritable, aggressive. Signs of anemia appear, stool is disturbed, nausea and repeated vomiting join. There may be discharge from the eyes, the coat loses its smoothness and shine.

Diphyllobothriasis infection occurs when eating raw fish or thermally poorly processed fish dish. The incubation period lasts up to one month, during which there may be no signs of the disease.

Dipylidiosis. The disease is caused by flatworms of the genus Dipylydium (cucumber tapeworm). The color is gray-white or pinkish, the length can be about 30 cm. The intestines are the habitat. Mature segments of the parasite resemble cucumber seeds. A cat can become infected from intermediate hosts - fleas and lice. During illness, loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting and lethargy are noted. The cat becomes nervous, irritable.

Alveococcosis. It is caused by small worms of the genus alveococcus. Alveococci are no more than 4 mm long. From the moment the larva enters the body until its maturation into a sexually mature individual, it takes 3 months. The work of the digestive system is disrupted. The animal suffers from diarrhea followed by constipation. Vomiting appears, sudden weight loss. A cat can become infected if it eats a sick rodent.

Hydatigerosis. The causative agent of the disease is the cestode strobilocercus, which parasitizes in the small intestine. The length can reach 60 cm. The cat looks weak, lethargic, does not eat well, is losing weight. Diarrhea and vomiting join. Infection occurs by eating rodents.

Description of drugs

Treatment with modern anthelmintic drugs, subject to the prescribed dosage, does not pose a danger to the animal. It is important to consider the health of the pet. Do not start treatment if the cat is pregnant or nursing kittens.

  1. Fenasal. It disrupts metabolic processes inside parasites and destroys the outer protective shell. Give to the cat at a dosage of 0.15 g / kg once, mixing into the food.
  2. Prazitel. The dosage is equal to 1 tablet per 1 kg of animal body weight. Give once during the morning feeding, mixing with a small amount of feed. If necessary, the administration can be repeated after two weeks.
  3. Bunamidin. For 1 kg of body weight, cats take 25 mg of the substance. Give once, before use, you can not feed for three hours.
  4. Drontal. Prescribe once, dosage - 1 tablet per 4 kg of body weight of the cat. The medicine is allowed to be given to small kittens and pregnant cats.
  5. Treatment can be carried out with the anthelmintic drug Azinox. It should be given in the morning during feeding, no diet required. The tablet should be dissolved in a little water. The dosage is drawn into the syringe in accordance with the weight - 1 ml / 1 kg. Do not give kittens under 3 weeks old.
  6. Droncite. 1 tablet is calculated per 10 kg of animal body weight. One application is enough. Can be crushed and fed with feed.

Along with the main treatment, other types of drugs are prescribed. To cleanse the body of toxins and improve the functioning of the digestive organs, hepatoprotectors, probiotics, enterosorbents, and enzyme preparations are prescribed. You may need the help of antihistamines, immunomodulators and choleretic medications.

It is worth trying traditional medicine. You can add tansy, wormwood, pumpkin seeds, cloves, garlic to the feed. All these and many other natural ingredients are able to expel parasites from the body. They can be used with basic antihelminthic treatment to strengthen the fight against disease.

Symptoms of the appearance of worms

The main signs to look out for are:

  • pet weight loss;
  • alternation of loose stools with constipation (streaks of mucus and blood can be found in the feces);
  • worried about itching in the anus (the cat licks or bites the anus);
  • the coat becomes dull, tousled, falls out;
  • the belly is swollen, rumbling is heard, touching it causes pain;
  • heavy breathing, dry cough;
  • plaque on the tongue, unpleasant odor from the mouth;
  • the animal is lethargic, sleeps a lot, does not play.

If the animal is not provided with timely assistance, complications develop. Adult parasites begin to pinch the arteries, disrupting the cardiovascular system. There may be peritonitis, intestinal obstruction, severe allergies. The work of the digestive organs is disrupted, bile stagnation occurs.

In order to prevent infection with helminths, you need to follow the basic rules of hygiene and nutrition:

  • you can not give raw meat;
  • do not touch the cat without washing your hands after the street;
  • you do not need to allow your pet to access outdoor shoes;
  • preventive therapy against worms and fleas should be carried out every six months;
  • it is necessary to keep the animal's tray clean (you cannot add street sand as a filler).
