Antibiotics for amebiasis

There is such a disease as intestinal amebiasis, and with this pathology, antibiotic treatment, mainly of the tetracycline series, is appropriate.

Infection with this disease occurs in the same way as with many helminthiases - through dirty fruits and vegetables, unwashed hands, etc.

Broad-spectrum antibacterial drug. Despite the fact that it is very effective in the fight against protozoa, the big disadvantage is that Emetin is very toxic. Currently, this remedy, unfortunately, is not available in every pharmacy.



Emetine is available in the form of injection solutions. The drug is administered intramuscularly, once a day in the amount of 0.1 g. The course of treatment with Emetin is two days. Such therapy is sufficient for the full effect of the antibiotic on the causative agent of amebiasis. With treatment for more than two days, a huge toxic effect on the human liver and kidneys occurs.


Emetin cannot be used by children under six months, and the drug is categorically contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women because of the risk of causing serious harm to the child.

Emetine can have the following side effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Muscle pain and spasms.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Trembling of the upper and lower limbs.
  • Chills.
  • Spasmodic pain in the right hypochondrium.


In the treatment of amoebiasis and other diseases caused by protozoa, Lincomycin is an excellent agent that reduces the activity of the gram-positive bacterial flora and suppresses protein synthesis in the amoeba body.

This drug is available in the form of injection solutions and capsules. Lincomycin is readily available at any pharmacy and is relatively inexpensive.


Treatment of amebiasis requires two doses of the drug intramuscularly or intravenously per day. The daily dose of Lincomycin is not more than 1200 mg. The duration of the course of treatment is two weeks.


This antibiotic is contraindicated in people with individual intolerance to the components that make up the composition. Lincomycin should not be used in children under 12 years of age, as well as in pregnant and lactating women.

The use of Lincomycin can lead to the following side effects:

  • Headache and dizziness.
  • Bradycardia and hypotension.
  • Allergic manifestations - anaphylaxis, rash on the skin like urticaria, Quincke's edema.
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea.

These antibiotics, again, are best taken together with antiparasitic drugs, so their effect will be much more effective. A competent combination of such medicines should be selected and prescribed by a specialist.
