Ways of infection and signs of disease

Helminthiasis in dogs can be recorded at different ages. At the same time, smooth-haired breeds become infected less often than animals with long fluffy hair.

Worms can enter the dog's body in several ways:

  • licking outdoor objects, drinking water from puddles and open bodies of water;
  • fleas, ticks are carriers of larvae;
  • contact with strangers or stray sick animals;
  • infection of puppies can occur in utero or during breastfeeding;
  • feeding your dog raw meat or fish.

You should contact your veterinarian when the following symptoms appear:

  • the dog is not active, plays little and sleeps a lot;
  • loss of appetite;
  • puppies stop growing and physically develop;
  • the condition of the coat deteriorates, loss is not associated with the shedding period;

  • the dog itches.

A wide variety of helminth species can be found in dogs. All of them can be divided into three groups.

  1. Cestodes include tapeworms. A dog can become infected by swallowing fleas, lice or ticks by licking its fur. These parasites can be up to several meters long. The habitat is various parts of the intestine.
  2. Roundworms belong to the group of nematodes. Infection can occur through eating food, contact with sand or soil. Puppies are especially sensitive to the disease - they lose weight, stop developing, look drowsy and lethargic.
  3. Trematodes represent a group of flukes. You can get infected by eating raw fish or meat. The organs of the digestive system are affected, first of all, the liver and gallbladder are affected.

If the invasion spreads, the respiratory, cardiac, digestive and endocrine systems begin to suffer.

The most common drugs in suspension

Worm suspensions for dogs are usually prescribed for small puppies, but they can also be prescribed for small breed dogs. Suspension from worms is prescribed in order to prevent infection or quickly get rid of the disease. Prevention helps to reduce or eliminate the risk of helminth infection. Treatment is carried out according to a certain scheme, taking into account the age, weight and health of the pet.

For small breed puppies, low toxicity antihelminthic drugs may be prescribed. The dosage in most cases is equal to 1 ml per 1 kg of body weight of a pet.

  1. The suspension should be purchased from specialized veterinary pharmacies. Do not give animals anthelmintic drugs intended for humans.
  2. It is advisable to establish the type of parasites that live in the pet's body.
  3. If there are fleas or ticks, get rid of them a few days before the start of deworming.
  4. At the time of treatment, the dog must be healthy.
  5. You can not independently reduce or increase the dosage.
  6. During the course or after it, hepatoprotectors should be given, which will protect the liver from toxins.
  7. 4 hours after taking the medicine, any enterosorbent should be given.

If, after taking an anthelmintic drug, a large number of killed parasites come out along with feces and vomit, the situation indicates a strong invasion. A repeated dosage should be taken after 2 weeks.

Preventive measures will avoid re-infection:

  • avoid contact with street, stray dogs;
  • it is impossible for the dog to drink from puddles, eat raw meat and fish;
  • you need to cleanse the pet's fur from fleas in time;
  • outdoor shoes should be kept out of the reach of the animal.

If you follow the rules of hygiene and start treatment on time in case of infection, you can preserve the health of not only the dog, but also all family members.
