Infection routes

Pigs are more susceptible to infection with worms than other domestic animals. This happens because animals often eat dirty food and even soil. It is in the ground that the eggs of worms are most often found.

Additional sources of infection include:

  • faeces from infected animals;
  • contaminated water;
  • grass on which there are eggs of worms.

If an adult animal is infected, there is a high risk that the piglets will also have worms. When purchasing piglets, there is a risk of bringing infected cubs into the herd. Therefore, you should not rush and connect the newly arrived animals with the rest of the pigs. It is necessary initially to carry out antihelminthic prophylaxis and only then place the piglets in a common herd.

If treatment is not carried out on time, the infection will quickly spread to all pigs

Helminths in the animal environment are transmitted very quickly. It is important to see your veterinarian to prevent the spread of parasites. The specialist will advise, if piglets have worms, how to treat them.

Signs of helminthic invasion

A characteristic sign of the presence of worms in piglets is poor weight gain. Worms can settle not only in the intestines, but also in the throat, respiratory tract, so the animal can suffer from a cough. In addition, piglets are worried about itchy throat, they become nervous and aggressive. The piglet refuses to make contact with its relatives.

Types of worms in pigs

The presence of worms in pigs is a frequent occurrence. Pigs are found to have:

  • nematodes;
  • roundworm;
  • cestodes;
  • trematodes.

Nematodes are a type of roundworm that grows to enormous size. These parasites can be several meters long. Infection is carried out through the oral cavity. They are released into the environment together with excrement. The eggs of the worms enter the body of pigs with water or grass. Nematodes settle in the intestines, but there are species that affect the heart, lungs, and liver.

Roundworms are a subspecies of roundworms. Young pigs and piglets are susceptible to ascaris infection. They are rare in adult pigs. Parasites settle in the intestines, where they reproduce. With the feces, the eggs of the worms come out and infect the environment.

Cestodes are referred to as tapeworms. This group includes tapeworms and tapeworms. Parasites provoke echinococcosis in pigs. Worms can settle in any organ and tissue of the body.

Trematodes or flukes are small in size. Parasites are equipped with suction cups, with which they are fixed to the intestinal walls. Helminths of this genus feed on blood. They are the cause of serious diseases in pigs, cause inflammation in the intestinal mucous tissues. The main symptom of infection is indigestion and frequent diarrhea. Infection occurs mainly through eating raw fish.

Infected animals must be isolated from the rest. But it will be necessary to treat not only those animals in which worms were found. For preventive purposes, the drug is given to all pigs that have had contact with infected animals. The course of treatment will last at least one month, since the effect of the treatment will have to be consolidated after some time.

The dosage of drugs should be prescribed by a veterinarian. You do not need to do this on your own. Exceeding the dose can harm the animal and even lead to death

A small dose of the drug will not have the desired effect - the worms will remain in the pig's body.

The following drugs are used to treat pigs.

  1. Sodium fluorosilicate in the form of a powder is one of the most popular remedies for worming piglets. The medicine is diluted with liquid or dry food. The dosage of the medication should be strictly calculated taking into account the weight of the pig. The treatment lasts one or two days.
  2. Hygromycin B is a powder drug that is very effective in the treatment of ascariasis. The drug leads to the death of parasites. Hygromycin is given to pigs that are two and a half months old. The treatment lasts one month. The medicine can be given to piglets from 2 weeks of age for prophylactic purposes. If the dose is calculated correctly, then there will be no harm from Hygromycin.

Nilverm has many analogues - Krasverm, Ascaridil, Biverm, Nemytsid and more than a dozen drugs with a similar effect. The drug is presented in the form of powder and solution for injection. Nilverm is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and excreted from the body. The medicine has a wide spectrum of action, paralyzing parasites. In this state, the worms begin to leave the body. The drug is especially effective for ascariasis. The treatment lasts 2-3 days. The medicine is suitable for piglets over 1.5 months

  • onion;
  • radish;
  • fresh horseradish;
  • pumpkin seeds;
  • carrot;
  • beet.

These products can be introduced into pigs' diets and used as an additional means of worm control.

Preventive measures

To get rid of parasites, it is necessary to disinfect the premises in which the infected animals were kept. Feces should be removed regularly. The manure of infected pigs must be destroyed by incineration. In no case should it be used as a fertilizer.

Correctly carried out treatment and preventive procedures will avoid re-infection with worms.
