Klebsiella (Klebsiella) - conditionally pathogenic bacteria that live and reproduce without oxygen. In the human body they are in the form of sticks, outside it - in capsules. In capsules, their survival rate is great.
Due to their high resistance to antibacterial drugs, the World Health Organization classified Klebsiella bacteria as very dangerous in 2017. Klebsiella in infants is a particular threat.
What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>
Klebsiella
The opinion of Dr. Komarovsky
Under normal conditions, Klebsiella is in the child's body, but does not manifest itself in anything. It is absolutely safe and lives in the body of any healthy child and adult.
As soon as there was a failure in the immune system, for example, after the use of antibacterial drugs, the normal intestinal flora changed.
Bifidobacteria and other beneficial bacteria have become suppressed, there is no one to inhibit the intensive growth of Klebsiella, so their intensive growth has begun. But this is already a threat to the life of a small child. The danger lies in their strong toxic effects on the body of infants.
What can trigger growth and launch development
- Transition from breastfeeding to formula feeding.
- Violation of sanitary regime and hygiene.
Symptoms and manifestations
At the place of localization, bacteria can be conditionally divided into main types:
- Klebsiella pneumonia;
- Klebsiella intestinal infection.
Klebsiella pneumonia
Klebsiella pneumonia is a very dangerous disease for infants and newborns. With the wrong or untimely treatment, the disease is fraught with its many complications.
The main symptoms
- high temperature (up to 40 degrees);
- lethargy, weakness;
- severe cough (at first dry, then with viscous mucus, possibly mixed with blood).
With advanced forms of the disease, a lethal outcome is possible.
But such pronounced symptoms are not always present in an infant. Parents should be alerted if the baby has loose stools, lethargy. There may be no fever, but there is a cough, symptoms of bronchitis.
In infants, the process of the growth of the disease goes like an avalanche: from mild malaise to serious complications, it can take only a few hours.
Klebsiella in the intestines of a baby
Klebsiella intestinal infection
It is not always possible to make the correct diagnosis immediately, since the symptoms are similar to diseases of enteritis, enterocolitis and other acute gastrointestinal diseases.
The onset of the disease is stormy:
- high body temperature of the child (reaches 39 C);
- vomiting up to 8 times a day;
- severe diarrhea (up to 15-20 times);
- foam and blood in the stool;
- the color of feces changes to green;
- putrid smell of feces;
- the stomach is painful;
- refusal to eat;
- the child's condition deteriorates very quickly;
- dehydration quickly sets in.
In the event that not all of the listed symptoms are on the face, but only some, a doctor's consultation is needed.
Where does it come from
Klebsiella bacteria are found in water, on the surface of vegetables, fruits, in soil, etc. This is the oldest inhabitant of our planet and its survival rate is very high.
You can infect a baby in a maternity hospital through equipment, from infected patients, from non-sterile bottles with complementary foods, from the mother's dirty hands, etc.
Animals can carry bacilli on their fur, so they should be removed from the apartment after the baby is born.
Klebsiella in a baby in feces
If you accidentally find Klebsiella in the feces of a baby, you should not panic. This is normal. It is necessary to monitor the condition of the baby. If he is healthy, eats well, and is not capricious, the presence of these bacteria is not a cause for concern. Fighting these bacteria is not worth it.
Klebsiella in a baby in urine
Infants' urine is practically sterile. The presence of Klebsiella in the urine does not always indicate a disease. It is very difficult for infants to collect clean urine, so it is necessary to pass tests three times.
The likelihood of incorrect collection is thus eliminated. If, on subsequent tests, Klebsiella is again sown in large quantities, it can be assumed that the disease is present.
To clarify the diagnosis in newborns or infants, a urological examination is performed.
Norms
To diagnose Klebsiella infection, any child's discharge is used: feces, urine, mucus from the nasopharynx, etc. The main method for determining bacteria is a feces culture tank.
If more than 106 microbial representatives are found in 1 g of feces, klebsiellosis is diagnosed. Typically, the mean fecal klebsiella is 10 4 and is normal.
If Klebsiella is found in urine and clinical manifestations of the disease are present, then the child has an acute urinary tract infection.
Do I need to treat
If the baby feels good, gains weight, develops with age, does not have any symptoms of disease, but Klebsiella was found in the feces, do not worry and do not write off feeding the child with medicine. Get tested in another laboratory several times if you are worried about it.
How to treat
Newborns and children with severe intoxication are treated in a hospital.
The general treatment regimen is aimed at:
- Appointment of intestinal antiseptics (Uroxolin, Furazolidone).
- Appointment of probiotics (Bifiform, Lactovit).
- The use of enzymes (Festal, Pancreatin).
- Use of bacteriophages (Bacteriophage Klebsiella).
An approximate treatment regimen for systemic infection.
A drug | Dosage |
Ampicillin |
45 mg / kg; 7 - 10 days. |
Neomycin |
10 mg / kg; 7 days. |
Bacteriophage Klebsiella |
From 1 month up to 6 months - 5 ml; 6 to 1 year old - 10ml; 14 days. |
Bifiform |
1 package / 3 times a day; 5 - 10 days. |
With timely treatment started, recovery occurs relatively quickly. To prevent the disease, it is necessary to strengthen the immune system. It is he who is the limiting factor in the development of Klebsiella.
