Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) is a parasite from the genus of roundworms that causes a disease called enterobiasis. This disease can be asymptomatic for a long period.

The most common sign of pinworm infestation is itching around the anus. Without timely treatment, the disease causes serious health problems.

What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>

Morphology

The main morphological features of pinworms include:

  • White color;
  • threadlike body shape;
  • pointed ends;
  • males grow up to 5 mm in length, females up to 13 mm;
  • the female can lay 5-17 thousand eggs;
  • parasitizes the worm in the lower part of the small intestine.

Life cycle of Enterobius vermicularis

Pinworm infection occurs when their eggs are swallowed. When the eggs enter the intestines, after a month, larvae are released from them, which are attached to the mucous membrane. After 2 weeks, the worms reach sexual maturity. The parasite feeds on the contents of the intestine, erythrocytes.

After mating, the males die, and the females after 14 days descend into the rectum. They come out at night when the muscles of the anus are relaxed. During this time, they lay eggs around the anus. Under favorable conditions, the eggs ripen within 4-7 days.

During clutch, the female secretes an enzyme due to which the eggs are attached to the skin. It causes itching, the person begins to involuntarily scratch the itchy area. The eggs fall on the hands, under the feet, and then on the surrounding objects, into the mouth. This is how re-infection occurs and the life cycle repeats.

The main routes of infection

Man is the main source of the invasion. Due to severe itching, the infected combs the clutch, transfers the eggs with his hands to the face, household items, and into the mouth. They also get on underwear and bedding. They can be found on such items:

  • dishes;
  • toys;
  • table;
  • chairs;
  • money;
  • Food;
  • hygiene supplies.

Pinworm eggs can carry insects, move with dust, on animal hair. They can maintain vital functions at a temperature of -15-55 degrees Celsius. Usually, infection occurs:

  • through the hands;
  • household items;
  • not washed and poorly processed food;
  • dust;
  • swallowing water from polluted reservoirs, swimming pools.

Invasion symptoms

Enterobiasis occurs in the acute and chronic stages.

Stage Description
Sharp Duration - 5-7 days. During this period, develop:

  • stomach ache;
  • intestinal discomfort (especially in the morning);
  • bouts of nausea;
  • loose and frequent stools.
Chronic It is almost always asymptomatic. With intensive infection, already at 12-14 days at night and in the morning, there is a feeling of severe itching around the anus, abdominal pain. After 2-3 days, the symptoms disappear and recur after a month. This frequency lies in the life cycle of the parasite.

The main symptoms of an invasion include:

  • itching - appears not only at night, but also during the day, spreads to the genitals;
  • severe abdominal pain;
  • false urge to defecate;
  • flatulence;
  • frequent and loose stools;
  • weight loss;
  • headaches;
  • dizziness;
  • unstable psycho-emotional state;
  • fainting;
  • the development of skin diseases, such as eczema;
  • in blood tests, the number of leukocytes and eosinophils increases.

With prolonged infection, a person develops:

  • diseases of the genitourinary system;
  • urinary tract infections;
  • appendicitis;
  • dermatitis;

Treatment

Therapy is selected individually and only by the attending physician based on the test results and other characteristics of the body, the form of the disease.

The patient is prescribed antihelminthic drugs, for example, Pirantel, Albendazole. After 2 weeks, treatment is repeated to exclude the likelihood of relapse.

Treatment for Enterobius vermicularis aims to eliminate the symptoms and cause of the infection. It is categorically not recommended to select medicines on your own, and especially folk remedies. Otherwise, the development of side symptoms and significant deterioration of the condition is possible.

If any negative symptoms appear, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and safe and effective therapy. It is contraindicated to independently adjust the treatment regimen. This can be done exclusively by the attending physician and only if necessary.
