Helminthic invasions can be caused by parasites of various shapes and sizes. In this article we will tell you about the largest worms in humans and give their photos.

The length of some of these helminths can be considerable. They can also form rather large neoplasms (cysts), the weight of which can reach several kilograms.

What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>

Ascaris (25-40 cm)

Parasites live in the human intestine, and they are found in both adults and children. The size of the worm depends on its sex: in males - up to 25 cm in length and 4 mm in thickness, in females - up to 40 cm and 6 mm, respectively. Finding them is quite problematic - the worm does not attach to the walls of the intestine, it moves freely along it, so there are no parasites in the feces after defecation. Their eggs may be found, but this is not always the case.

Roundworms belong to the class of roundworms, their body is spindle-shaped in shape and pointed at the ends. Males and females differ not only in size, but also in appearance. Males have a characteristic bend at the end of the body.

Pork and bovine tapeworms (1.5-6 m)

They affect the human intestines, causing spastic pains. Adults live in the gastrointestinal tract, and the larvae spread throughout the body, which poses a serious threat to human health.

The parasite is a worm with a ribbon-like body, the length of which can be from 1.5 to 6 meters. Moreover, the duration of its life can reach several tens of years. During this time, a violation of immunity can be caused, a general weakening of the body, various diseases can appear.

Pork and bovine tapeworms go together, but infection with pork tapeworm is more dangerous. This is due to the fact that it can affect not only the intestines, but also other organs. For example, larvae can take up residence in muscles. Bovine tapeworm parasitizes only in the intestines.

Pork Ascaris (15-49 cm)

The worm is common in pigs and wild boars, but it can also infect humans, causing a disease called ascariasis. The parasites are spindle-shaped and the body is usually white or pink. Male pork roundworms have a distinctive feature - the posterior end of their body is bent towards the belly. Length: 15-30 cm in males, females are larger - 20-50 cm.The thickness usually ranges from 2 to 6 mm.

A feature of females is their high fertility. They can lay from 200 thousand eggs per day. This happens as early as 6-8 weeks after infection. Eggs are eliminated from the body in the stool. The parasite is widespread everywhere. Ascariasis occurs more often in the summer due to the fact that flies act as carriers of eggs.

Spirometra worms (3-30 cm)

The disease caused by the larvae of these parasites is called sparganosis. Most common in the Far East and Asian countries. The larvae enter the intestine, then through its walls enter the lymph nodes, then spreading throughout the body. They are retained in the subcutaneous tissue, muscles and conjunctiva of the eye, where they cause inflammatory reactions and have a squeezing effect on blood vessels and nerves. They can also cause allergies.

The size of the larva is 3-4 cm, but sometimes it reaches 30 cm. An adult can be up to 1.5 m long. The larvae located under the skin resemble a small seal, similar to a tumor. Such formations can appear and disappear, as well as cause pain and discomfort, but this does not always happen. The larvae can infect the brain, causing nervous disorders and headaches.

Rishta (4 cm - 1 m)

The second name of the helminth is the Guinean worm. The parasite causes the disease dracunculiasis. Infection is possible by drinking dirty water. The size of males is 4 cm, and the length of females can reach up to 1 meter. Refers to the largest representatives of tissue worms.

It usually spreads in the dermal layers, most often in the lower extremities. The full development cycle lasts about 12 months, while a large number of larvae accumulate in the body of the female. The parasite has special receptors that are sensitive to water. At the right moment, the worm tears the skin of a person and throws the larvae out. They can live in clean water for 6 days, in dirty water - 2-3 weeks.

The peculiarity of the worm is that it does not die when passing through the stomach, being exposed to gastric juice. Usually, only one representative parasitizes in the body, but the number of individuals can increase to 50. In the last 20, strictly in the countries of Africa and Asia, all cases of the disease are strictly taken into account and all measures are taken to prevent them.

Vlasoglav (3-5 cm)

The defeat of the large intestine by these parasites is called trichocephalosis. Vlasoglavs are round worms (nematodes) with a special shape. The front of them is thinner than the back, which looks like a whip with a handle. Worms infect both animals and humans. There is a special type of parasite - Trichocephalus trichiuris, which is called the human whipworm.

Usually the body of the whipworm is thin, white or grayish-red in color. All internal organs are located at the back of the body, so it is thicker. For males, a tail twisted in a spiral is characteristic; in females, it looks like an elongated arc.

The length is 3-5 cm. The female lays eggs, which are yellow or brown in color. Their shape is barrel-shaped, the shell consists of four layers. A peculiarity of the parasite is that it feeds on blood, which leads to anemia.

The largest representatives of helminths that infect humans include roundworm, pork and bovine tapeworm, pork roundworm, worms from the Spirometra genus, guinea worm and whipworm. They differ both in structure and in their life cycle. These parasites are quite dangerous for human health.
