Thiabendazole is prescribed for the treatment of helminthiasis caused by:

  • human roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides);
  • intestinal acne (Strongyloides stercoralis);
  • trichinella (Trichinella spp.)
  • hookworms of the New World (Necator americanus);
  • crooked heads of the duodenum (Ancylostoma duodenale);

Side effects

  • In the gastrointestinal tract: abdominal pain, gag reflex, anorexia, jaundice, nausea, cholestasis, renal failure, or liver damage.
  • In the central nervous system: headaches, dizziness, fatigue, sleepiness, numbness, confusion, collapse, convulsions, irritability.

The procedure for taking the drug

The drug is intended for use as a whole course. You should not interrupt treatment with Tiabendazole, even in cases where there is a positive trend. In the first days of admission, symptoms of intoxication (nausea and even vomiting) may increase. A similar reaction of the body is due to the fact that dead helminths begin to be excreted, which the body perceives as a toxin. The instructions indicate the standard doses of the drug, which may be changed by the attending physician. The use of Thiabendazole, in the form of a suspension or tablets, is contraindicated for children.

Treatment regimen

The regimen for taking the drug depends on the type of helminthiasis. Effective treatment and dosage of the drug:

  1. Strongyloidosis. The course of treatment is two days (2 tablets are taken per day). For the disease at the initial stage, a single dose of the drug with a dosage of 50 mg is allowed.
  2. Mobile larva. The two-day course helps to cope with migratory larvae, which threaten human health. The daily allowance consists of two Thiabendazole tablets.
  3. Trichinosis. The course of treatment consists of 4-5 days (two tablets per day).
  4. Ascariasis. The drug is used twice a day with meals. The maximum course of treatment is three days. Taking 50 mg of the drug is allowed if the patient has severe symptoms of intoxication. A high concentration of the drug can cause side effects.
