Metronidazole belongs to the antibiotics of the nitrofuran series and is used as a second-line drug in the treatment of most infectious diseases of bacterial etiology, when first-line drugs are ineffective.

In some cases, it is used in combination therapy, in particular, when a stomach ulcer is complicated by Helicobacter.

What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>

pharmachologic effect

Metronidazole is an extremely broad-spectrum drug used in the treatment of many diseases. It affects the DNA of the microorganism, disrupting the synthesis of bacterial DNA and RNA and ultimately causing its death. The action of the drug begins after 3-4 hours of its entry into the human body and its almost complete absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.

Release form

It is produced in the form of tablets of 250 and 500 mg, as well as a solution for injection, vaginal gel, vaginal suppositories (suppositories) and cream for external use.

The composition of the drug, along with the active substance metronidazole, contains a number of auxiliary substances, depending on the form of release.

Indications for use

The range of indications for use is extremely wide: from protozoal infections, including infections of bones and joints, central nervous system, abdominal cavity, skin and soft tissues to sepsis, pneumonia, gastritis and duodenal ulcers, gynecological operations and even alcoholism.

In our context, the use of metronidazole for the treatment of giardiasis and amoebic liver abscess is of particular interest.

If, after the treatment of giardiasis, the symptoms of the disease continue to persist, then it is recommended to carry out three stool analyzes at regular intervals after 3-4 weeks to detect the presence of lamblia.

The fact is that even with successful therapy, in some patients, as a result of invasion, lactose intolerance occurs, symptomatically reminiscent of giardiasis, which can manifest itself for several more weeks or even months.

There are not many of them:

  • pregnancy and lactation;
  • individual intolerance due to hypersensitivity to the active substance or other components of the drug.

Side effect

During treatment, various side effects can occur from many body systems:

  • digestive;
  • cardiovascular;
  • urinary;
  • musculoskeletal;
  • CNS and peripheral nervous system.

The manifestation of side effects depends on the disease and the prescribed course of therapy, therefore, no independent use of metronidazole without a doctor's prescription is unacceptable.

According to the active substance, metronidazole has many analogues (klion, trichopolum, flagil, metrogil gel, rosamet cream), their choice depends on the doctor.
