Helminthiases (in common parlance, worms) are far from harmless to the human body, some of them in advanced cases can even lead to death. How do you know if there are worms?
The problem is that most helminthiasis do not have specific symptoms, they very often "disguise" themselves as symptoms of other diseases, and the patient spends a lot of time, effort and money on treating completely different diseases, if the examination does not pass on time and he does not have revealed the true cause of the disease - worms.
What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>
Scheme of actions to find out if there are worms in the body
How often poor health, abdominal pain, indigestion and other manifestations of helminthiasis are attributed to other diseases! But it is enough to carry out differential diagnostics based on the tests passed in order to establish the true cause of the disease.

Often, tests have to be taken several times to accurately establish the presence or absence of worms in the body. This is due to the cycle of their life, with the frequency of laying eggs and other factors.
To effectively treat helminthiasis, it is necessary to identify the type of parasite that caused it, so self-medication here is not only ineffective, but also dangerous, since most anthelmintic drugs, especially of a wide spectrum of action, are quite toxic and can bring the body not complete disposal of the worms, but harm …
The first signs of parasites
How to find out without analysis if a person has worms in the body? Worms negatively affect the work of many organs and systems, and if you listen carefully to your body, then the following failures in its work may cause suspicion of the presence of worms.
The first, as a rule, is the gastrointestinal tract:
- diarrhea, followed by constipation, which may be a sign of the development of intestinal obstruction;
- the presence of mucus and bile in the feces;
- nausea and vomiting;
- pain in the abdomen;
- pain in the right hypochondrium, aggravated after eating;
- bloating or frequent passing of gas;
- weight loss despite abundant nutrition.
Helminthic invasion due to the massive release of toxins during the life of helminths and their absorption of useful microelements negatively affects the functioning of the central nervous system:
- severe headache like migraine;
- high fever, sometimes fever;
- muscle pain;
- chronic fatigue syndrome;
- insomnia;
- violation of concentration;
- severe irritability;
- constant feeling of weakness.
Often, helminthiasis is accompanied by:
allergic reactions in the form of a skin rash, itching, urticaria

- cold symptoms: cough, runny nose, asthmatic suffocation;
- inflammatory processes: sinusitis, sinusitis, sometimes stomatitis;
- lamination and fragility of nails;
- cracks in the soles of the feet;
- violations in the genital area in women: vaginosis, vaginal dysbiosis, inflammation of the appendages.
The few symptoms specific to helminthiasis include:
- with enterobiasis: severe itching in the anus, especially at night, when female pinworms crawl out and lay eggs, which can be observed visually;
- the contours of subcutaneous and tissue worms visible to the naked eye on the patient's body.

In a child, the symptoms of helminthic invasions are, in principle, the same as in an adult, but more pronounced due to a lack of nutrients, some of which are consumed by the worms. Helminthiasis can negatively affect not only the physical, but also the mental development of the child, which leads to their slowdown. Irritation of the urethra can cause bedwetting.
What worms can a person have
To date, several hundred helminthiases are known, which get their name from the Latin name of the worm that provoked this disease. All helminths are divided into the following types:
- roundworms - a class of nematodes;
- flatworms, which in turn are subdivided into:
- class of tapeworms - cestodes;
- a class of digenetic flukes - trematodes.

Roundworms (nematodes)

Tape worms (cestodes)

Trematodes
Helminths are also classified depending on their localization in the body into:
- intestinal, or luminal, parasitizing in the lumen of some organs, mainly in the intestine, and causing ascariasis, trichocephalosis, strongyloidosis, teniarinchiasis, etc.;
- tissue, parasitizing in various tissues: muscles, brain, subcutaneous fatty tissue, etc. and causing trichinosis, schistosomiasis, filariasis, toxocariasis, etc.;
- hepatobiliary system (liver, biliary tract): pistorchiasis, fascioliasis, etc.;
- helminths of the lungs, causing: paragonimiasis, echinococcosis, etc.;
and also by the way they enter the body for:
- oral, entering the body through the mouth;
- percutaneous, penetrating intact skin.
Sometimes helminthiases can be mixed, when several types of worms parasitize in the human body at once.
Accurate diagnostics and analyzes
Perhaps the only helminthiasis that can be detected independently is enterobiasis caused by pinworms (see above). The symptoms of all others are so similar to diseases of an organic nature that one cannot do without laboratory diagnostics. As a rule, a stool test and a blood test are ordered.
It may be necessary to take a stool test several times, at regular intervals, in order to identify the eggs of the worms, accurately determine their type and avoid a false negative result (it can be obtained if the infection with the worms occurred less than 3-4 months ago). In the laboratory, feces are examined under a microscope, if necessary, fecal flotation is used.
A routine blood test indicates the presence of parasites in the body, but does not provide complete information about a specific species. The most reliable analysis for the determination of helminths by blood is ELISA - an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, during which antibodies to toxins secreted by a very specific type of helminth are detected in the blood. ELISA also allows you to determine the degree of helminthic invasion. The ELISA accuracy is 95%.

How to tell if your cat and dog, puppy or kitten have worms
Our pets are a real breeding ground for worms. Not only do the cat and the dog have their own worms, but they also bring them on their fur and carry them throughout the house. To determine if a cat or dog has worms, you should carefully monitor the behavior of your pet and pay attention to the following signs that indicate the presence of helminthiasis:
- chronic diarrhea with intermittent vomiting;
- lethargy, apathetic behavior;
- impaired appetite and weight loss;
- the appearance of purulent discharge from the eyes;
- scratching the area around the anus;
- tarnishing of the coat.
Here are the symptoms that are typical for some animal helminthiasis:
- with ascariasis, the cat has a rounded belly and too much appetite;
- with nematodes caused by flukes, anemia develops in dogs and cats, and in a kitten or puppy it can be fatal;
- with hookworm infection, the animal suffers from severe anemia.
It is almost impossible to prevent infection of pets with worms, but if they are detected in a timely manner and treated on the recommendation of a veterinarian, then the pet can be saved from uninvited guests, for whom he is both a table and a house.
