Remember how in childhood we were forced to wash our hands with soap to prevent worms from developing? Then we imagined them as worms living in the stomach.

The most interesting thing is that in general terms this is not so far from the truth. For example, roundworms in humans really look like a long round worm with pointed tips, and the length of the female reaches 40-45 cm, and the male - up to 25 cm.

What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>

Now imagine that such a “sweet couple” lives in your body. This thought alone causes a sickening sensation, but the whole horror is that the number of people infected with roundworm is huge, although they themselves may not know about it.

What are the ways of infection with human roundworm and how can this be avoided? First, let's figure out what this parasite is.

Ascaris life cycle

Roundworms (Ascaris lurabricoides) belong to helminths (this is how worms are scientifically called) and are representatives of nematodes - roundworms.

Ascaris eggs have amazing vitality: they are able to survive in the ground, even in thirty-degree frost!

It is there, in the ground, that they ripen. When, with the onset of spring, the temperature and humidity of the air create optimal conditions for ripening, full-fledged mobile larvae appear from the fertilized eggs, which are carried by flies.

It is not for nothing that flies are considered the main way of hacking various intestinal infections and parasites to humans.

Once mature, fertilized eggs enter the esophagus, the risk of contracting human roundworm is maximized.

This is what is called the fecal-oral route of infection with ascariasis: some people, together with feces, hatch ascaris eggs, while others, who do not follow the rules of protection from infection (the second way), bring them into the mouth, as a rule, with food.

Now the roundworm larva has full scope, because our body for it is the whole world! Together with food, the larvae directly enter the intestine, and through its walls - into the blood vessels, which transfer them to the lungs.

From the lungs, they are excreted with sputum into the oral cavity, and the process is repeated: saliva and food again transfer the larvae to the intestines, where they "ripen", and then grow to an adult roundworm.

Then the "sexually mature individual" lays a terrifying number of eggs every day, which come out with feces, and everything is repeated again.

The only consolation is that, if a person is not re-infected, then the adult roundworm will live only a year, and then it will die a natural death and will be excreted from the body naturally, that is, again, together with feces.

How roundworms affect various human organs

In principle, roundworms are able to inhabit almost any organ of a person, and this can cause not just a little discomfort, but a decrease in immunity and serious deterioration in the state of the body.

Most often this is expressed in an allergic reaction due to infection with roundworms, since the products of their vital activity are very allergenic, therefore, not only the affected organs suffer, but the entire body. Allergy manifestations can be expressed as skin rashes or runny nose.

In addition, the consequences of infection are manifested in the form of:

  • general weakness and anemicity;
  • loss of appetite;
  • sleep disorders and, as a result, increased nervousness.

These are only fairly general manifestations of the consequences of infection, which many attribute to completely different reasons: stress, overwork, age-related phenomena; sometimes they are mistaken for manifestations of completely different diseases (for example, hepatic ascariasis - for hepatitis or liver abscess).

It is unlikely that it would occur to anyone that ascaris infection manifests itself in this way. However, the list of these consequences does not end there.

Intestines. If roundworms are localized in it (most often in its thin section), then this disrupts the stability of its functioning: pain in the intestines may appear, especially in the navel, and bloating, the stool becomes unstable, constipation often occurs, nausea and vomiting are possible.

Lungs. If roundworms nestle in the lungs, then this will cause breathing problems, shortness of breath, a dry cough often appears, which is sometimes accompanied by sputum production - in short, all these symptoms are very similar to bronchitis.

If the lesion is especially intense, then even the presence of ascaris in the nose or throat can be recorded. It happens that they come out of the nose or mouth, so that they can be seen with the naked eye.

However, such cases are quite rare, and usually a sputum analysis from the throat, as well as an ultrasound of the lungs, is necessary to identify the parasite.

Liver and biliary tract. The liver is almost the favorite organ of roundworms, to which they strive to get through the bloodstream, and due to high mobility, the larvae may physically damage the intestinal walls and capillaries.

As a result, hepatic ascariasis occurs, which, in terms of symptoms, resembles gallstone disease, only with more severe pain attacks.

Often, the presence of ascaris in the biliary tract is evidenced by painful sensations in the hypochondrium and the appearance of jaundice, but if the excretory duct of bile is wide enough and parasites do not interfere with its separation, then jaundice may not be.

And these are not all organs that can be infected with ascaris infection. The pancreas, lymph nodes, heart muscle, and even the brain can suffer from their harmful effects.

Ways of infection with ascaris

Ascaris eggs are so small (only 7 micrometers) that it is impossible to see them with the naked eye, and they can be present almost everywhere where flies, their main carriers, have landed.

Therefore, it is extremely important not to keep foods that will not be heat treated open.

Often, by getting worms inside a person is the use of feces to fertilize garden plots, which makes infection almost inevitable.

There are two ways: either to abandon this fertilizer and thoroughly clean the site of it, or to wash the products obtained from it extremely thoroughly.

And even better - pour boiling water over vegetables and fruits, because the roundworm larva dies already at 38 ° C.

Measures to combat infection with ascariasis

When the infection has already occurred, the best option is to consult a doctor, do the necessary tests and strictly follow the prescribed treatment regimen; but preventive measures are also good ways to protect your body from parasites:

  • Wash hands with soap and water more often (after going to the toilet, before eating, after using public transport, etc.) and educate children in this habit.
  • Be sure to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables that are not heat-treated (it is better to pour boiling water over them).
  • Drink only bottled or boiled water.
  • Do not leave dishes and food open.
  • Fight flies in all possible ways, do not allow their presence in the house.
  • For owners of garden plots, do not use feces as fertilizer and regularly clean the soil from them on their site, and also equip a cesspool on it properly.
