Piperazine is a popular anthelmintic drug that, unlike most others, is prescribed even for pregnant women, due to its pharmacological action.

pharmachologic effect

The drug is effective against nematodes (roundworms): ascaris, which excite ascariasis, and pinworms, which induce enterobiasis, that is, against the most common types of helminthiasis, and it affects both adults and parasites at an early stage of development.

What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>

Roundworms (nematodes)

As a result, the parasites are no longer able to fix on the intestinal mucosa and, under the influence of intestinal motility, are excreted from the body along with feces.

However, unlike the action of the overwhelming majority of anthelmintic drugs, the worms do not die at the same time, that is, the body does not intoxication with their decay products, which is the reason for the low toxicity of the drug.

To remove immobilized worms, as a rule, cleansing enemas are used, especially with a tendency to constipation.

Deworming with piperazine after the first course is from 90 to 95%, and after the second course it reaches 100%.

Release form

It is produced in the form of tablets containing 200 mg and 500 mg of adipate. For children, piperazine is available in solution.

The drug is available in the form of tablets for adults and a suspension for children.

The composition includes the main active ingredient - piperazine adipate and some auxiliary substances.

Indications for use

Indications for use are ascariasis and enterobiasis; against other helminths, it practically does not have a serious effect.

Unlike other drugs for worms, piperazine therapy does not require a preparatory period and adherence to a special diet, which, of course, is another of its advantages.

However, much attention is paid to hygiene and hygiene procedures, without which the treatment will not give the desired effect due to the possibility of repeated and self-infection.

The course of treatment can be carried out at home, but only as directed by a doctor and in the dosage indicated by him.

For ascariasis, the course is 2 days, for enterobiasis - 5 days, and the course of treatment for enterobiasis is repeated another 1-2 times at weekly intervals.

It is important that the intestines are regularly emptied, because in this way paralyzed, but not dead worms are excreted from the body.

Therefore, cleansing enemas are often prescribed, and with ascariasis they are done after therapy, and with enterobiasis - in the interval between courses.

Contraindications to use for deworming are:

  • lesions of the central nervous system of an organic nature;
  • chronic renal failure;
  • hypersensitivity to the active substance or other components.

Side effect

Side effects are manifested in the form of abdominal pain, nausea and transient headaches. Overdose of the drug may cause tremors and muscle weakness.

Analogues include anthelmintic agents of both narrow and wide spectrum of action. These include Biltricide; Dekaris; Vermox; Wormin; Helmintox; Nemozole; Pirantel et al.
