Pinworm infestation is quite common among people of any age group. This parasite provokes the development of enterobiasis, which is characterized by pronounced symptoms.

Ignoring the disease can lead to serious complications. There are several ways to diagnose an infection that are important to know. A timely visit to a doctor and diagnosis of pinworms will help prevent the development of invasion.

What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>

Laboratory methods for the diagnosis of pinworms

The initial stage of infection is not accompanied by severe symptoms. It takes about two weeks for the eggs to mature. It is possible to detect the parasite in the feces only when it grows to a sexually mature individual and begins to reproduce.

Among the diagnostic measures, scraping, stool and blood tests are usually prescribed. Sometimes, to detect the disease, the patient is prescribed several types of smears:

Perianal Rabinovich method According to Torgushin According to Kevorkova
The analysis is taken using adhesive tape, which is applied to the perianal zone. After taking a smear, the tape is sent to the laboratory for examination under a microscope. The smear is done using the sticky surface of the eye scapula. It is carried out in the same way as with tape. For the analysis, a cotton swab is required, with which the perianal folds are washed off, and the contents are placed on a glass slide. It is carried out identically to the research by Torgushin.

The methods according to Kevorkova and according to Torgushin are used extremely rarely - they are laborious, ineffective. Sometimes urine tests are prescribed to diagnose pinworms, since the parasite can mechanically penetrate the genital area.

Stool analysis for pinworms

The study of feces will be reliable if the eggs of the parasite are in it. The analysis does not require special preparatory measures or skills. You just need to empty the bladder - urine should not come into contact with feces, so the analysis will be as reliable as possible.

Pinworm scraping

The container for the biomaterial must be extremely sterile and dry. Pharmacies sell special plastic cups with a spatula that allows you to collect feces.

The resulting material is placed in a container, tightly closed and sent to the laboratory. It is better to collect feces from three different places, for example, the middle, two ends, in general, it should turn out to be about 2 tsp. biomaterial.

If it is not immediately possible to take the analysis to the laboratory, the jar can be stored for no more than 8 hours in the refrigerator.

Blood test for pinworms

A complete blood count can detect worms in the intestines. This can be detected during a routine inspection.

The presence of pinworms in the analyzes is indicated by changes in the level:

  • eosinophils - infection provokes an increase in their number. These cells are produced by the immune system to neutralize enzymes that are toxic to the body, formed as a result of the vital activity of pinworms. Accordingly, an increase in eosinophils indicates invasion. In a healthy person, this indicator can increase by no more than 5%;
  • hemoglobin, erythrocytes - a reduced amount of these substances provokes anemia. It may indicate an invasion of pinworms, which feed on the contents of the intestines, blood, and provoke inflammation. In a normal state, the hemoglobin level is in the range of 120-140 g / l, erythrocytes - 3.5-5.5 million units / ml of blood.

Is it possible to diagnose pinworms at home

To recognize pinworm infestation, it is important to know the negative symptoms that they cause:

  • rapid fatigability, general weakness;
  • critical weight loss;
  • stomach ache;
  • stool disorders;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • sleep problems;
  • pale skin;
  • increased body temperature;
  • headaches;
  • joint pain.

In the chronic stages of invasion, adult worms can be found in the feces. These are round worms of white color, spindle-shaped, no more than 1.5 cm long. A microscope is required to detect eggs.

Adults are extremely mobile and therefore easy to see. However, dead worms can also be present in the feces - males die after mating, females after laying eggs.

No one is immune from infestation by helminths. Compliance with preventive measures, personal hygiene rules significantly reduces the risk of infection.

If a person suspects infection, it is better to refuse self-medication and visit a medical facility. Self-therapy can significantly worsen the state of health, complicate the healing process.
