Hookworms in cats cause great harm to animal health. They parasitize the small intestine. Consider the biology of the helminth, routes of infection, clinical symptoms, control measures and prevention.

General information
General information

What to do in such a situation? To get started, we recommend reading this article. This article details the methods of dealing with parasites. We also recommend contacting a specialist. Read the article >>>

Ankylostoma is a small, 5–13 mm long, filamentous nematode. Adults live in the intestines, the laid eggs are excreted in the feces. They hatch into larvae that remain viable in the soil for a long time. They enter the alimentary tract of a cat with water or when licking contaminated paws. However, another route of infection is also possible - through the pores of intact skin. In this case, the larvae are carried by the bloodstream into the trachea, for some time they feed there.

For puberty, the hookworm must enter the intestines. The activity of parasites is accompanied by the addition of a second microflora, the development of inflammation, coughing and swallowing of larvae. Intrauterine infection of kittens usually does not occur, but immature hookworms wander throughout the body, get into the secretions of the mammary glands and infect suckers.

Danger to humans

There is no unequivocal opinion on this issue. There is no doubt that the human hookworm is harmful to human health. Only a narrow specialist is able to determine the type of helminths. However, the symptoms of feline nematodes are similar, and the likelihood of contracting them to humans exists. Therefore, it is necessary to wash your hands after contact with your pet.

Hookworms have sharp teeth, with the help of which they pierce the mucous membrane and the walls of small vessels. To prevent blood from clotting, worms inject an anticoagulant into the wound. Anemia develops with a large headlamp.

Crowded content, especially in a homeless cat cattery, contributes to the general infection of animals.

Clinical symptoms

The main symptom of ankylostomiasis is anemia, characterized by the following symptoms:

  • lethargy;
  • lack of appetite;
  • weight loss or stunted growth;
  • pallor of the mucous membranes, this is especially noticeable when examining the mouth;
  • intestinal disorders;
  • cough;
  • vomiting;
  • the feces are dark-colored, which indicates intestinal hemorrhages;
  • six loses its luster, becomes untidy;
  • paw pads bleed, become inflamed.

Features of the course of the disease

A nkilostoma in a cat behaves somewhat less actively in the body than in a dog. That is why these animals never have intrauterine infection of the fetus. However, hookworms can penetrate into the mammary glands with blood flow, including in a cat. In this case, newborn kittens will definitely be infected from their mother through milk.

The developmental cycle of the parasite

So, we found out what is and what a hookworm looks like in cats. In one infected animal alone, several hundred females of these dangerous worms can be kept. In this case, the parasites lay several thousand eggs daily. After a while, the latter enter the environment with the cat's feces. After about 1-3 weeks, larvae emerge from the eggs, capable of living for a very long time in the soil without a carrier.

Features of the development of the parasite

Worms that enter the cat's intestines first begin to feed on its tissues. Also, the larvae can "graze" on the mucous membrane. The parasites do not cause any particular harm to the cat's body during this period. However, after a few days, the larvae grow up and begin to feed directly on the blood of the animal. At this time, the first symptoms of infection with such a parasite as hookworm appear in cats. A photo with the names of the stages of development of the larvae (picture) can be seen just below.

In small kittens, the disease progresses slightly differently from adult animals. The first external signs of infection in them usually appear even before the parasites reach puberty and eggs appear in the feces.

Treatment features

So what should the owners do when detecting the presence of such a parasite as hookworm in cats? A photo of these worms for an inexperienced person, of course, can even scare. The nematodes of this group look really frightening. However, fortunately, nkilostomiasis does not belong to the category of incurable diseases. It is quite possible to rid the animal of parasites even in a short time. To do this, you just need to choose the right treatment method.

In a veterinary clinic, a patient is usually prescribed special antihistamines for an oshka, and a special supportive diet is also developed for her. Animals infected with hookworms lose weight very quickly. Therefore, their menu must necessarily include foods containing a large amount of protein.

The presence of this type of nematode in the body of a cat, as already mentioned, almost always leads to anemia. Therefore, the diet of a sick animal, among other things, includes foods containing iron. In the most severe cases, when it is not possible to eliminate acute anemia with the help of food and drugs, a fluffy patient may even be prescribed a procedure such as a blood transfusion.

Hookworm in cats: how to treat drugs

Of the drugs, the veterinarian usually prescribes universal remedies for the animal designed to destroy cestodes and nematodes. Almost any drug of a similar purpose can be suitable in this case.

Worms in cats (hookworms are not an exception in this regard) are most often treated with agents based on:

In most cases, drugs such as Fenbendazole and Mebenvet are used to treat cats. The course of treatment with the first type of drug is 5 days. The animal is given a tablet once a day. The cat is also treated with Mebenvet for 5 days. But they give her two pills a day.

How to give the drug correctly

Cats are known to be reluctant to take any medications, including those for worms. Therefore, in order to feed their pet with a remedy prescribed by a doctor, the owners will most likely have to resort to tricks.

First of all, the cat should be wrapped in a stream of an unnecessary sheet. Next, you need to put on thin rubber gloves on your hands. Then you should carefully open the cat's mouth and put the pill just below the root of the tongue. In this case, it is worth making sure that the animal does not damage the glove with its teeth. At the final stage, the cat owner should, of course, wash their hands thoroughly under running water and soap.

Sometimes the owners also grind the tablets prescribed by the veterinarian into powder and mix them into the cat's food. But such a method is still better to use only if the agent is offered to the animal as a preventive one. Actually, when treating a nkilostomiasis and the owner must be completely sure that the medicine has entered the body of the sick animal in full.

Thus, the reader now knows the main pathways for the appearance of such a parasite as hookworm in cats. The treatment of this disease must, of course, be done correctly. But it is equally important to observe all the necessary personal precautions during its implementation. Unfortunately, the owners can pick up parasites from a sick pet very easily.

Hookworm in cats is also transmitted to owners in several ways. The owner of an infected animal can get sick even by simply stroking it and not washing his hands after that. Also, the larvae of the parasite can live in the animal's tray, on its bedding and in its bowl.

At the dacha, people often become infected with a nkilostomiasis when performing various kinds of earthwork. Larvae can also be swallowed with unwashed fruit. The owners of a sick animal should not walk barefoot around the yard. The larvae can easily enter the bloodstream through the feet.

In a city apartment, in order to avoid infection, a sick cat should definitely select its own corner. The bedding of a sick animal must be changed periodically. The old rug can be washed (separately from other things). But it is still better to use some unnecessary old rags as bedding for a sick cat and just throw them away when changing.

Treatment: how to act correctly?

The use of veterinary drugs

The dosage and medications are prescribed by a veterinarian, self-medication can harm the animal. To expel ankylostoma, the following medications are used:

  • "Caniquantel";
  • Milprazon;
  • Praziquantel;
  • Febantel;
  • Pirantel;
  • Piperazine;
  • "Noftamon";
  • "Tetramisole";
  • Mebenvet.

There are effective anthelmintic drugs in the form of drops that are applied to the skin of a cat - "Profender", "Stronghold". For anemia, preparations containing iron, cobalt, and copper are recommended. Fortifying vitamin complexes are required - "Beafar Kittis Mix", "Feliderm", "Polydex", "Doctor Zoo", "Radostin".

Home treatment

Folk remedies are not a substitute for medication and you should consult a veterinarian before use. Ankylostoma in cats is expelled by a decoction of pumpkin seeds. Preparation:

  1. Take 30 g of raw seeds, peel so as to preserve the green skin.
  2. Twist into a homogeneous mass and pour 50 ml of warm water.
  3. Add 0.5 tsp. honey, mix.
  4. Take immediately after preparation.

Therapeutic diet

If a cat's hookworm starts, the animal's body loses many useful substances. Therefore, the diet should be high in calories. It is recommended to give your pet food of the holistic class or premium brands - "Akana", "Bozita", "Pronatur Holistic", "Trainer", "Origin". Foods contain all essential vitamins, trace elements and herbs. It is also recommended to give raw liver in small portions, no more than 1-2 p. in Week. The product is rich in iron and is good for anemia. Veterinarians recommend hard-boiled, lean meats, minced in a meat grinder, but not purchased.

Is hookworm transmitted to humans?

People get ankylostomiasis, but the danger is represented by helminths of the Duodenale species and nekator. Feline species are rarely transmitted to humans. In humans, infection occurs primarily through the skin and causes itching, skin redness and burning. Parasites can migrate through the body, causing anemia and internal bleeding.

In order not to start a hookworm in cats, the owner is advised to regularly deworm the pet, take an analysis of the animal's feces for worms. After visiting the street, it is advisable to wash the cat. It is necessary to carry out prevention of fleas that can be carried by the larvae of worms. It is recommended to periodically disinfect the cat's sleeping place.
