Instruction Tablets under the trade name "Pirantel" are antihelminthic agents, they can be taken by both pregnant women and young children (but under the supervision of a doctor). The price for them is low, the efficiency in infection with the most common worms is high. They often prescribe Pirantel, there are practically no contraindications for use.

Indications for use

Pirantel tablets or suspension are indicated for use with the following diagnoses:

  • enterobiasis (pinworms);
  • ascariasis (roundworm);
  • ankylostomiasis;
  • non-kotorosis;
  • trichocephalosis.

Pirantel is prescribed quite often, both for adults and very young children: the price and toxicity are low, and the effectiveness is high. But taking the drug by children should be strictly controlled by a doctor.

Method of administration and dosage

The dose of the drug is calculated according to the patient's body weight, if it is below 75 kg, 10 mg per 1 kg is taken. One "Pirantela" tablet contains 250 mg of the substance, in a blister there are 3. One blister contains 750 mg of the substance, this is enough for a single treatment of one adult.

The instructions for use recommend the following dosage:

  • 125 mg for children 6 months to 2 years old;
  • 250 mg 2-6 years old;
  • 500 mg 6-12 years old;
  • 750 mg from 12 years old.

When used, the tablet must be chewed very carefully. The suspension is easier to take, you do not need to chew it. Reception is carried out during or before meals. There is no need to follow a special diet before taking it, fast or follow any specific measures.

Also, the instruction assumes the following treatment for different invasions:

  • 10 mg / kg once for roundworms and pinworms; in special cases, the calculation of the dose is 5 mg / 1 kg.
  • 10 mg / kg per day in a course of three days with ankylostomiasis.
  • 20 mg / kg per day for a treatment period of two days in case of serious infection with non-kotorosis.

The dosage is approximate. The exact one is prescribed by the attending physician, taking into account the patient's condition and possible risks to his body.

Side effects

Tablets, like the suspension of the same name, can cause the following side effects when taken:

  • painful sensations in the stomach;
  • diarrhea;
  • headaches;
  • dizziness;
  • temperature increase;
  • fever;
  • skin rashes.

These side effects are among the most common. They can go almost unnoticed, but there are also a number of activities that are very rare. These include:

  • increased activity of liver transaminases;
  • drowsiness;
  • a state of general weakness;
  • insomnia;
  • paresthesia;
  • possible hallucinations;
  • hearing impairment.

If any of the side effects have been noted, you should definitely consult a doctor. He can cancel, change or allow to continue taking Pirantel, depending on the observed clinical picture.

Contraindications

The drug is contraindicated for use in two cases: if the patient has an intolerance to the active substance or other components of the composition, also if there is myasthenia gravis at the time of the alleged intake.

Limited use

The suspension or tablets of this antihelminthic agent are permissible for use, but under the supervision of a physician and with caution to the following categories of patients:

  • pregnant and lactating women;
  • very young children (from 6 months);
  • patients with renal insufficiency.

For patients belonging to these categories, the drug "Pirantel" can be prescribed by the attending physician, but only if the possible result outweighs the possible risks.

The tablets, like the suspension, are available, the instructions for use are clear, and the price for them is not high. But this does not mean that you can safely take them without consulting a specialist. Especially if you belong to one of the above groups. It must be remembered that anthelmintic drugs work only against certain types of worms. And to find out who exactly settled in the body, you can only with the help of tests.

Interaction with other drugs

At the same time, it is not required to prescribe any laxatives for use, the suspension and tablets will be effective without it. But after the first dose, repeated fecal tests should be taken to check if there are any worm eggs left in the body. In case of a positive result, the treatment is carried out again after 14 days.

It is worth taking note of the possible side effects from the nervous system. The drug can cause hallucinations, dizziness, problems with psychomotor movements and other disorders, therefore, during therapy, it is recommended to refrain from driving cars, controlling complex mechanisms and performing any work that requires a quick reaction.

Pirantel is not compatible with another cheap and effective drug, piperazine. If you take both of these substances at the same time to get rid of worms, the effect of the former will be significantly reduced. The specialist will not prescribe them together, the instructions for use will not recommend either.

Overdose

In case of overdose, pronounced side effects may appear. It is treated with traditional gastric lavage of the patient, drinking plenty of fluids and a therapeutic diet. There are no separate antidotes to the drug, the pyrantel substance also does not stay for a long time in the body.

Storage conditions

Both tablets and the Pirantel suspension should be stored in a place where they will be inaccessible to children and animals. Storage temperature should not exceed 25 degrees, do not allow direct sunlight. Choose a dry and dark place for storage.

Shelf life

The tablets are stored longer than the suspension. The shelf life is 3 years from the date of issue, during this time pyrantel retains its properties. After this period, you cannot accept them, it is worth buying a new package. The price of tablets is kept within 20-30 rubles in Russia, the suspension costs a little more (30-50 rubles).

Composition and form of release

Pirantel in tablet format is available in packs of 1-2 blisters. One blister contains three tablets, each containing 250 mg of the active ingredient (pyrantelum, pyrantela embonate). Also, a very detailed instruction for use is attached to the blister in a cardboard box. Under the same name (and the active ingredient), a suspension can also be found on the shelves of pharmacies.

The tool acts on active sexually mature and immature worms, blocking their neuromuscular transmission. Parasites develop paralysis, they rush to leave the host's organism, which has become unfavorable for them. Pyrantel does not affect the larvae and eggs of helminths, therefore, after treatment, it is necessary to re-test. Repeated therapy with the same drug may be required in order to get rid of the parasites completely. In parallel, taking a laxative is not required for a speedy cleansing.

The average single dose of the substance is 10 mg / kg, the maximum concentration from the moment of administration is reached after 1-3 hours. It is excreted in the feces (half of the substance in an unchanged state) and urine, partially metabolized in the liver. In the area of the gastrointestinal tract, it is poorly absorbed.

Pregnancy and lactation

Large-scale studies of how the substance acts on the fetus during pregnancy have not been carried out, but it is known that it gets into the milk of a nursing woman.

If the remedy has been prescribed for a nursing woman, it is necessary to first express a sufficient amount of milk to stop feeding during therapy.
