Chloxil is a drug now discontinued from mass production, intended to combat trematodes. This tool is still found in some pharmaceutical chains, but the reason for the stoppage of production lies directly in its low effectiveness when compared with other drugs. Let's take a closer look at what Chloxil is and what are its more effective analogues.

Description of the drug

Application of the drug

Chloxil is an antiparasitic agent designed to combat helminths of the trematode family. After entering the human body, the drug provokes a short excitement of parasites, which is replaced by oppression and death. The agent is most effective in the treatment of opisthorchiasis, fascioliasis and clonorchiasis, which are caused by Siberian, hepatic and Chinese flukes, respectively.

If we compare Chloxil with synthetic analogues, its effectiveness indicators are about 20% less, and the level of toxicity is much higher. For the maximum positive result of treatment, as a rule, two courses of the drug are required, and such an amount could adversely affect the functioning of the liver, stomach, kidneys, heart and even intestines. With a second course, the likelihood of side symptoms is high, so it is more advisable to use market analogues for treatment.

Indications and contraindications

Chloxil is intended for the treatment of parasitic liver infections (opisthorchiasis, fascioliasis, clonorchiasis), but the effectiveness of treatment after the first course is about 62%. The product is distributed in the form of a powder intended for the preparation of suspensions.

Chloxil is contraindicated:

  • In the presence of cardiovascular diseases;
  • With renal or hepatic failure, as well as other diseases affecting these organs that are not associated with helminthiasis;
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding patients (during treatment, breastfeeding will have to be stopped).

The remedy is strictly forbidden to be taken by children, as the drug can lead to serious negative consequences.

Possible side effects

While taking the drug, a whole range of side symptoms can be observed:

  • Pain in the abdomen from the liver;
  • Enlargement of the liver in size;
  • Proteinuria (protein in urine analysis);
  • Heartache;
  • Increased fatigue and drowsiness;
  • Dizziness;
  • An increase in the number of eosinophilic leukocytes;
  • Allergic reactions, which are a reaction to the decomposition processes of dead nematodes.

If one or more side symptoms from the list appear, you must immediately stop taking the drug and consult your doctor as soon as possible. The drug can be replaced with a more sparing analogue, but only on the condition that there is a pause between the doses, during which the body will fully restore its normal state.

With the approval of the doctor, the main side symptoms can be waited out, and if allergic reactions occur, antigestamines and calcium chloride are prescribed.

An effective remedy for uncomplicated opisthorchiasis

Treatment of helminthic liver lesions with Chloxil is performed according to several schemes:

  1. Two-day. The product is dissolved in 1/2 glass of milk and taken immediately after a light breakfast. The dose is calculated according to the scheme 100-150 mg per 1 kg of body weight (6-9 g for an adult). The contents are divided into doses of 2 g, which are drunk at intervals of 10 minutes. At the end of taking Chloxil, after 2.5 hours, antispasmodics and choleretic are taken. All this is repeated within 2 days, and then it is necessary to visit a doctor who will prescribe a course of duodenal intubations. Its duration is 1-2 months.
  2. Three days. It is used for mass treatment at the epicenter of infections. The amount of the drug is 100 mg per 1 kg of weight, and the dose itself is divided into 2-3 doses with pauses of about 2 hours. The medicine is also washed down with milk.
  3. Five-day. It is used to treat children and people with liver problems. The medicine is taken within 5 days at 0.06 g per 1 kg of body weight. Full recovery with this scheme occurs in 5-6 months.

At the end of any of the courses, a duodenal examination with juice collection is mandatory. This analysis is done a week after the end of the main course. Within 5-6 months, parasite eggs will naturally be excreted from the body - during this period it is necessary to observe the maximum level of hygiene, since the likelihood of self-invasion is high.

Analogues of Chloxil

Since Chloxil has been discontinued, other, more modern drugs are used to treat trematodes:

  1. Praziquantel is one of the most effective broad-spectrum anthelmintics. This remedy is used to treat schistosomiasis and trematodes. The components of the drug penetrate deep into the cells of parasites, cause muscle contraction and paralysis. It is excreted by the body through the liver and naturally within 1 day. The tool is distinguished by its gentle effect on the human body, but it is not used to treat helminths in children under 4 years of age, and in the future - only under the strict guidance of a specialist.
  2. Albendazole - inhibits the ability of helminths to assimilate glucose, and with the right dose leads to the rapid death of parasites. The drug is not prescribed for children under the age of 2 years. It is also forbidden to take the drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  3. Artemisin is a natural antihelminthic drug that is prescribed for children, as well as for people who have serious liver problems. This remedy is considered one of the most sparing, since it does not load the liver, but to get rid of parasites, it is necessary to undergo a course that lasts 1-1.5 weeks. Also, the drug can be used for prevention.
  4. Eksol is a biologically active additive that is prescribed for complex antihelminthic therapy. The tool enhances the action of other drugs, and also has a positive effect on the liver, kidneys and eliminates gastrointestinal pathologies.

Chloxil has long been discontinued, but some pharmacies still have stocks of the drug. It is not recommended to use this drug for the treatment of parasitic invasions, as it has high toxicity rates and adversely affects the functioning of many systems of the human body. There are many analogs on the market, both a wide range and a targeted action, which are more effective and less inconvenient.
