Worms during breastfeeding are quite common. After childbirth and during breastfeeding, the woman's body is rebuilt, its hormonal background changes. This becomes the cause of a weakened immune system. The body has difficulty resisting the penetration of pathogenic microorganisms, including helminths (parasitic worms).
How to choose a drug for worms while breastfeeding
Choice of medicines
The correct choice of drug is half the success in removing worms from the body. When choosing an anthelmintic drug, it is important to consider several factors:
- The causative agent of helminthiasis;
- Intolerance to active or auxiliary substances;
- The presence of concomitant diseases.
Before using medicines, go through diagnostic procedures and consult your doctor.

It is active against Pinworms, Human roundworm, Krivogolovka duodenal ulcer, Hookworm of the New World, Trichostrongilid. Blocks the motor activity of young and mature worms, but does not act on migratory larvae.
The dosage of Pirantel for adults weighing more than 75 kg is 1 gram of the drug per day, which is 1 tablet or 4 measuring spoons. During lactation, the drug is recommended to be taken under the strict supervision of a physician. With individual intolerance, Pirantel is contraindicated.

Prevention of infection
During the period of breastfeeding, the mother's body is weakened and vulnerable. Even after the worms are expelled from the body, you can get infected again. To prevent this from happening, follow these simple guidelines:
- If the parasites were detected in someone close to the young mother, all family members should undergo treatment. This should also be done if the parasites have been found in pets.
- To prevent re-infection from happening, it is important to follow the rules of personal hygiene: always wash your hands with cleaning agents, be careful about the cleanliness of clothes and personal items. First of all, this applies to agricultural workers who are constantly in contact with the land.
- Drink clean, filtered, or boiled water. Do not drink tap water, wells, or springs. When swimming in a lake or river, be careful not to swallow water that accidentally gets into your mouth.
- Before serving food on the table, you need to heat it. If we are talking about fresh vegetables and fruits, you need to pour boiling water over them. Meat, fish and poultry must be thoroughly fried or boiled.
- If you like to relax in nature, treat your skin with products that repel mosquitoes and other insects. Some animal species are capable of transmitting the eggs of the worms when bitten.
- Do not chew on pencils, hands, or nails. The eggs of the worms can enter the intestines along with the dirt that is on these items.
- If you have pets, check them regularly with your veterinarian and, if necessary, provide preventive treatment for parasitic worms.
Follow the recommendations listed and strengthen the immune system. Do not use medications unnecessarily.
Long-term use of antihelminthics can lead to serious side effects and complications.
