Oak bark is usually harvested from the following types of wood: pedunculate oak or common oak, rock oak and Asia Minor. Our article will describe oak bark: medicinal properties and contraindications.
Oak bark: useful and medicinal properties

The name of this tree "oak" comes from the word "tanning", because tannins in percentage terms are the main constituent of the bark. Their content ranges from 10-20 percent. If we list all the tannins that make up the tree, then these are:
- theanine;
- ellagolic acid;
- gallic acid.
In addition to tannins, it contains the following compounds and active ingredients:
- pectin substances;
- pentosans;
- quercetin, etc.
Oak bark has been prized since ancient times for its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It is still used today for diarrhea, chronic colitis (inflammation of the intestinal mucosa) and cystitis (inflammation of the bladder). The tannins in the decoction help to strengthen the mucous membrane of the digestive system, but at the same time reduce its absorption capacity. That is why, in the absence of tannin, oak bark is prescribed for various poisonings. This plant is good for sweating feet, fungal diseases and for strengthening hair.

If you need oak bark, medicinal use is possible only for bark collected in early spring during the beginning of sap flow. The most valuable bark is the one that has not yet been covered with a cork layer. It can be easily removed from the branches and looks shiny and smooth. After removal, it is cut into pieces and dried well in special thermal dryers. Storage of such blanks is allowed for five years.
