For the treatment of intestinal parasitic diseases, drugs are used that cause the death or paralysis of helminths. After that, they should naturally be removed from the intestines with feces. But often, against the background of intense invasion due to the death of too many helminths, constipation, obstruction or poisoning of the human body with toxins of dead worms is observed. To avoid such negative consequences of the treatment of helminthiasis, special agents are prescribed to cleanse the digestive system. It can be a laxative or an enema. For some patients, doctors prescribe Fortrans to cleanse the intestines.
Composition and description
The drug Fortrans contains sodium and potassium chloride, anhydrous sodium sulfate and its bicarbonate, as well as macrogol 4000. These substances are the active components of the drug. Sodium saccharinate acts as an auxiliary ingredient.
With the help of Fortrans, the colon is cleansed due to the laxative and osmotic effect. Due to the fact that macrogol 4000 forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules, water is retained in the intestine. Against this background, its contents liquefy, the volume of feces increases. All this contributes to the appearance of a laxative effect.
In the course of pharmacological studies, it was found that Fortrans is completely excreted from the intestines with feces. The first manifestations of the action of the medication will be noticeable 1 hour (maximum 1.5 hours) after it enters the stomach. The laxative effect lasts for at least two, maximum five hours. In the case of repeated administration, bowel emptying occurs sutra half an hour after repeated use of the drug.
The drug is not absorbed from the intestine, does not have a systemic effect, since it does not enter the bloodstream, and is also not metabolized. The agent is excreted in the feces unchanged.
Fortrans is prescribed in such cases:
- to cleanse the colon before endoscopic examination;
- for the same purpose before X-ray examination;
- it is used as a laxative to cleanse the gastrointestinal tract before surgery in this area;
- also cleaning with Fortrans is carried out in the treatment of helminthiasis.
Instructions for using the drug
Pinworm candles and rules for their use
Now it's time to tell you how to drink Fortrans. This laxative is only allowed for adults. To cleanse the intestines, Fortrans must be diluted in a liter of water, adding the contents of one sachet there.
In the first 10 minutes after preparation, you must drink 250 ml of the solution. One liter is drunk in the next hour. The rest of the daily dose should be drunk in the evening. If desired, you can take the entire daily portion once, stretching the reception for a couple of hours. For a single use, after drinking two liters, you can take a break for an hour.
In the case of a two-stage use, the first two liters should be drunk in the evening, and the remaining liter or two in the morning (in particular on the day the procedure is scheduled). You need to leave one glass of the solution to be taken 3-4 hours before the study.
If the operation or study is scheduled for the morning, then the drug must be taken in the evening. It is important to stop drinking the laxative solution at least three hours before the time of the proposed procedure.
In the treatment of helminthiasis, the prepared solution must be drunk after that time after taking the anthelmintic medicine, which is indicated in the instructions for the anthelmintic. This time interval may differ slightly for different drugs, but usually it is 2-4 hours after taking the pills.
If you have been prescribed Fortrans, the instructions for use for cleansing contain the following information regarding contraindications to the use of this drug:
Candles for worms for children and adults
- not prescribed to children and adolescents (age limit is 18 years);
- severe dehydration in the patient;
- severe heart and vascular insufficiency;
- intestinal carcinoma with a significant spread of the process;
- any intestinal pathology associated with damage to its mucous membrane (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis);
- the threat of perforation of the gastrointestinal tract;
- toxic colitis;
- any pain in the abdomen of an unexplained genesis;
- pathology of gastric emptying, for example, gastroparesis;
- intestinal obstruction (confirmed or suspected);
- toxic megacolon.
Since clinical studies on the use of this agent in pregnant and lactating women have not been conducted, Fortrans is prescribed to these populations only in case of urgent need and under the supervision of a physician. Since the drug contains sodium, this must be taken into account when prescribing it to patients on a salt-free diet.
When using the drug, you may experience the following undesirable effects:
- Gastrointestinal tract: nausea and vomiting at the very beginning of the intake. However, these are temporary reactions that quickly disappear after using the next doses of the drug. Also, while taking it, bloating may be observed.
- Allergic reactions when taking the drug are manifested in the form of various rashes, itching, urticaria, anaphylactic shock or angioedema.
Due to the fact that while taking Fortrans, the absorption of other drugs from the gastrointestinal tract decreases, they must be taken at least two hours before using the medicine we are describing. This only applies to medications for oral administration.
With extreme caution, the medication is prescribed to persons with weak health and the elderly. They must take the medicine under the supervision of a doctor. It is also prescribed with caution in patients with heart or renal failure due to the threat of pulmonary edema on the background of excess fluid intake.
Drugs with a similar effect include drugs that also contain macrogol. However, in addition to this component, they have other constituents of the substance that may differ from the composition of Fortrans. These medications include the following:
- Diagnostic-Health Powder;
- Edofalk powder;
Lactulose-based products also have a laxative effect. They can be classified as analogs in terms of pharmacological action, but not in composition. These are Dufalak, Laxarin, Lactuvit, Lactulose, Normolact and Protalact syrup.
