There are a huge number of parasitic human diseases. Many names are not known to the average person. Therefore, if a diagnosis is made of schistosomiasis, opisthorchiasis, clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, this scares the patient, forcing him to seek remedies for mysterious ailments. It is often difficult even for an experienced doctor to choose a specific drug against helminths. They often resort to the use of a drug such as Biltricid tablets. This medicine is based on the active substance praziquantel, which causes muscle tissue contraction in helminths, disrupts metabolism, which leads to their death.

General information
Biltricid release form - film-coated tablets in a dark glass bottle with a plastic stopper. The bottle is in a cardboard box. One tablet of the drug contains 600 mg of praziquantel and auxiliary components (corn starch, povidone, magnesium stearate). Analogs of the drug are Cesol, Azinox, Cysticide.
The agent is prescribed for the treatment of the following helminthic invasions:
- cestodes;
- trematodes;
- schistosomes;
- cat flukes of various types.
Take tablets before or during meals, without chewing, just squeezing water. If the doctor has prescribed a single dose of the medicine, then it is better to do this before bedtime. With repeated administration of Biltricid, it is necessary to do as long as possible time intervals (preferably 4-6 hours). Immediately after taking the drug inside, it completely dissolves in the digestive tract and enters the bloodstream. Praziquantel is excreted by the kidneys within 24 hours after consumption.
The price of a medicine varies depending on the manufacturer and the region of sale. On average, it is 400-500 rubles per pack.
Overdose, side effects, contraindications
There are no data on overdose with Biltricide. But if, during therapy, symptoms of intoxication (weakness, nausea, vomiting) begin to appear, then you need to wash the stomach and drink activated charcoal. But this rarely happens only if the patient does not follow the rules for using the drug and exceeds the dosage.
Side effects rarely occur with the correct use of Biltricide. Sometimes there are abdominal pains, nausea, drowsiness, cramps, arrhythmia, fever, skin rashes. But it is very difficult to distinguish whether these side effects are a reaction to an active substance, or they appear due to toxic substances that are released by the parasites during their death.
Contraindications for taking Biltricide include:
- Age up to 4 years, since its safety for small children has not been established.
- First trimester of pregnancy.
- Treatment with Rifampicin.
- Cysticercosis of the eyes.
special instructions
Specific indications for the use of Biltricid tablets include the following:
- after taking the drug, you should not drive for at least 12 hours;
- the use of the drug does not require the use of laxatives;
- in some cases (schistosomiasis, trematodosis), treatment should be carried out in stationary conditions under the supervision of doctors;

Treatment regimens
Since Biltricide is used in the presence of various helminthic invasions, before using this drug, it should be examined to determine the type of parasite that has settled in the body. Depending on this, a treatment regimen is prescribed.
Here are an example of the most popular therapeutic regimens:
Opisthorchiasis (cat fluke)
The defeat by such a type of helminth as the cat fluke is one of the most common parasitic diseases, in the treatment of which Biltricide is used. In this case, the dosage of the drug is 25 mg per kilogram of human weight. Treatment of opisthorchiasis takes 1-3 days. At this time, the drug is taken three times a day.
Schistosomes
If schistosomes are found in the body, then Biltricid must be taken once a day, 40 mg. The duration of antiparasitic therapy is one day, if necessary, the treatment is repeated after a few weeks, if suddenly the parasites do not leave the body.
Diphyllobothriasis
When the diagnosis of diphyllobothriasis is made, that is, the defeat of the body by a wide tapeworm, therapy with Biltricid is carried out for several days. The treatment regimen for diphyllobothriasis is as follows: the drug in the amount of 25 mg per kilogram of human weight is taken three times a day.
After therapy with Biltricide, to cleanse the body, a tubage with sorbitol, mineral water, xylitol is carried out daily for the first week, and then once a week. The course can last up to 3 months on the recommendation of a doctor. At this time, hepatoprotectors, antispasmodics, choleretic herbs are prescribed.
The effectiveness of treatment for parasitic diseases with the help of Biltricide is assessed after the patient passes tests for helminth eggs and for the identification of adults. This must be done one week after the end of the course.
How to deal with intoxication?
Parasites that live in the human body release toxins in the course of their life. This causes digestive problems and allergic reactions. After the course of therapy, it is necessary that the dead worms quickly leave the body. In addition, the antihelminthic drugs themselves have a negative effect on the liver, intestines, stomach and other organs of the gastrointestinal tract.
To remove intoxication after taking Biltricid, a diet will help, the purpose of which is to restore the body. The basis of the diet is the consumption of a large amount of fresh vegetables and fruits, fiber, slow carbohydrates, fermented milk products. You need to drink more clean water. You should not use sweets, pastries, spicy, smoked, fried.
Biltricide is considered the best antiparasitic drug. Subject to the basic rules of treatment, it will not cause unpleasant consequences and the worms will not return.
