Dipylidiosis, or in Latin Dipylidiosis, is a common disease that is diagnosed in dogs, cats, and in rare cases in humans. It is caused by a tapeworm, or rather one of its varieties - cucumber tapeworm. Infections are observed all year round, as they are promoted by parasites that live on the skin of animals: fleas, lice, lice.

Symptoms of dipyldiosis

Cucumber tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum) is a helminth. The size of adults is from 10 to 70 cm in length and 3 mm in width. It is smaller than many tapeworms, for example, a bovine tapeworm, reaching 10 m. It is attached to the carrier using special hooks located on the head of the body.

Cucumber tapeworm life cycle

The life cycle of the helminth begins with the proglottid stage, or the segment that lives in the small intestine. It leaves the host's body along with feces, and can crawl over considerable distances. Due to active movement, the parasite is widely spread.

When the membranes of the segment are destroyed, the eggs contained inside come out. They end up on the animal's body or on the bedding. It is eaten by intermediate hosts such as fleas or lice, as well as their larvae. The next stage of the life cycle of the cucumber tapeworm in the body of the larva comes - cysticercus.

When a dog swallows an infected insect, it immediately becomes infected. The cucumber tapeworm attaches to the walls of its intestines and within a month reaches the size of an adult. She begins to parasitize in the body of the final host, actively multiplies.

Signs of infection in dogs

Infection in dogs has the following symptoms:

  1. Disorders of the digestive system appear: cases of diarrhea and constipation alternate, vomiting occurs. They are caused by the fact that tapeworms injure the intestine, its secretory and motor functions are disrupted.
  2. The dog's appetite deteriorates, it looks lethargic.
  3. In the faeces of the animal, moving segments of the cucumber tapeworm are often visible, which resemble the larvae of flies.

  4. The skin becomes dry, can become covered with rashes, dermatitis is observed.
  5. Dogs suffer from anal itching.
  6. Seizures similar to epilepsy occur due to exposure to toxins produced by parasites. This symptom is characteristic of multiple cucumber tapeworm infestations.
  7. The puppies have an enlarged belly. The increase in the volume of the abdominal cavity is accompanied by general depletion, as with worms.
  8. Young animals may lag behind in development.
  9. Immune defenses are impaired. The dog is exposed to infectious diseases.

Treating dogs for cucumber tapeworm

The treatment regimen for cucumber tapeworm in a dog is selected by a veterinarian individually, depending on the degree of invasion, clinical signs and the presence of concomitant diseases.

Antihelminthic drugs are used to treat dipylidiosis. Before using most of them, you need to keep the dog on a starvation diet for 24 hours. Then it is necessary to carry out therapy in several stages.

For the treatment of dogs, cats and other animals from cucumber tapeworm, the same drugs are prescribed that are prescribed for roundworms and other parasites. They are produced on the basis of:

  • praziquantela (Quantum, Caniquantel plus, Drontal, Prazitel);
  • niclosamide (Phenagep, Fenasal);
  • mebendazole (rarely used).

Medicines with praziquantel as the main active ingredient are recommended to be added to food for dogs. The dosage is calculated according to the weight of the animal: 5 mg per 1 kg of body weight.

Antibacterial agents

In addition to drugs for deworming, dogs are prescribed antibacterial agents. The purpose of their intake is to suppress the pathogenic microflora in the intestines of the animal. Veterinarians may recommend one of the following medications:

  • Baytril;
  • Sulf 120 or 480;
  • Telanik;
  • Entroflor.

Restoring agents

The main treatment for dipylidiosis should be supplemented with medicinal substances that help to eliminate mechanical damage and restore the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. These are such drugs:

  • Cimetidine;
  • Kvamatel;
  • Ranitidine.

For dehydration or refusal to eat, dogs are given IVs. In some cases, it is recommended to take immunomodulatory agents to boost the immune defense.

14 days after the therapeutic course, control studies of animal excrement are carried out. If necessary, repeat the treatment.

Test for dipylidiosis

The owner can determine the presence of cucumber tapeworm in the dog's body without laboratory tests. To do this, it is enough to examine the animal's feces with a strong magnifying glass. In them, you can find the segments of the parasite, similar to small cucumber seeds.

Stool analysis

Parasitologists by their appearance determine the type of pathogen. In the event of the death of an animal, helminths can be detected as a result of opening and examining the intestines.

For laboratory diagnosis of dipylidiosis in dogs, carry out:

  • blood chemistry;
  • general blood analysis;
  • general urine analysis.

Prevention measures

This variety of tapeworms is considered the second most common of all helminths in the world. Archaeologists claim that it was known about it even in the days of the Ancient World. Therefore, the prevention of the disease comes to the fore, the causative agent of which is the cucumber tapeworm.

Another mandatory item is the regular deworming of animals. If there are dogs and cats who have had dipylidiosis in the house, it is important to treat furniture and textiles with disinfectants and antiparasitic agents:

  • bedding, sun beds, animal houses;
  • all surfaces;
  • upholstered furniture;
  • bed linen, blankets, pillows, mattresses;
  • curtains and curtains;
  • carpets.

Outdoor shoes must be washed upon returning to the house, as flea larvae can be carried on the soles. They hide in cracks, feed on dust and develop successfully, becoming a source of infection.

Dogs should not be allowed near stray animals during walks. It is recommended to wear anti-flea collars on pets.

The prognosis for treating dogs with dipylidiosis is generally favorable. In order for it to be such, it is necessary to seek help from a veterinary clinic in time. Strict adherence to preventive measures helps to avoid invasion.
