The nematoda or toxocara roundworm is a parasite. Therefore, it tends to infect other living organisms, as well as their organs, and lead to serious complications. Known diseases like toxascariasis and toxocariasis.

Infection is provoked by only two representatives of mammals:

  1. feline. Tiger, puma, cat. These representatives are the hosts of Toxocara cati or mystax. Habitat - small intestine, stomach. Females reach sizes up to 10 cm, males are much smaller - up to 7 cm.
  2. canines. Wolf, dog, fox. Carriers of Toxocara canis. The length of the female is about 20 cm, and the length of the male is from 10 cm to 13 cm.

They are full-fledged hosts of parasites. Only in animals do they reach the adult stage, which has the ability to reproduce. All other representatives are temporary carriers of infection who become infected from the consequences of excreting feces and eggs in them into the external environment.

Although many people mistakenly believe that it is the larvae of the parasite that enter the body. But this is not the case. They can only be formed in the human body in the process of development and attaining a certain stage of the life cycle.

The infection path is carried out in several ways:

  • through homeless street cats and dogs. They are more common in 6 month old puppies. Here, adults infect the small intestine and stomach of the animal, and for 4-6 months they hatch up to 15 thousand eggs with feces daily;
  • toxocariasis appears in adults and due to poor quality meat that has undergone insufficient heat treatment. It can be pork and lamb;
  • common cockroaches. They are also carriers of worms;
  • contaminated drinking water, especially for summer cottages and village wells;
  • wet soil and damp sand. Animals leave their waste in these places;
  • insufficient adherence to the rules of personal hygiene.

There is no need for specially created conditions for parasites to enter the body. Habitual daily activities like eating, drinking water, interacting with soil and pets lead to infection.

The source of penetration into the body of the parasite is the ingress through the affected food products, liquids and constant interaction with animals, the results of their decay or direct exposure to eggs.

After reaching the area of the gastrointestinal tract, they move to the next stage of the life cycle in the form of a larva, which will subsequently cause toxocariasis in humans. They rarely reach the stage of an adult representative. Sometimes, when infected from the feline family, the helminths return back to the intestines and reach the stage of a sexually mature individual.

Through the mucous membrane of the small intestine, they enter the circulatory system, traveling through which roundworms migrate to other organs and settle on tissues. There are many places for further habitation. This is the liver, and the pancreas, and the heart, where they easily penetrate through the pulmonary vein. Are visualized in the eye area. The most severe consequences are caused in the brain.

They are not activated immediately. They can be in the body for 10 years and periodically continue to migrate. Over time, they form capsules, where they die.

Susceptible to worms and parasites, naturally, most of all are young children aged 1 to 4 years, as well as people leading an improper asocial lifestyle. Also in this category of potential carriers of worms can be attributed to people of some professions, such as veterinarians, agricultural workers, farmers. In general, all those who, in one way or another, constantly come into contact with pathogens and vectors.

To determine what is toxocariasis, and what symptoms indicate it, it is necessary to consider in parallel the corresponding forms with their characteristic signs:

  1. visceral. Extensive damage to internal organs and systems by a large number of larvae. It is accompanied by pain in the abdomen, vomiting, bowel dysfunction, fever, enlargement of the spleen and liver, lymph nodes;
  2. ocular. Provoked ophthalmic problems by ingestion of individuals in the eye area. The ingress of the larva into the area of the eyeball, which leads to a violation of the integrity of the lens and retina. Inflammation of the optic nerve is possible;
  3. cutaneous toxocariasis. Disturbance of the epidermis due to the occurrence of allergic reactions to the results of the vital activity of parasites. Rash, redness, and severe itching;
  4. neurological. Damage to areas of the brain. They become the cause of dizziness, migraines, epileptic seizures, convulsions.

What do parasites lead to in the human body

The symptoms of toxocariasis will not seem at all so terrible if you compare them with the more unpredictable and severe diseases that it causes in the body, both in adults and in children:

  • endophthalmitis. Inflammatory process of the lining of the eye, which is accompanied by pus;
  • corneal infection, keratitis;
  • the onset of blindness;
  • weakening of vision or optic neuritis;
  • hepatomegaly. Enlarged liver;
  • lymphadenopathy. An unnatural change in the size of the lymph nodes;
  • urticaria, eczema. Dermatological problems are caused by the worms moving under the skin and even being visualized;
  • anemia. Decrease in hemoglobin index;
  • asthma, bronchopneumonia. Respiratory system disorders;
  • diarrhea. Sign of damage to the intestinal microflora;
  • Quincke's edema. It manifests itself in the form of allergic reactions and edema of the subcutaneous tissue;
  • laryngitis. Infections of the mucous membranes of the larynx;
  • cholecystitis. Complication of gallstone disease;
  • Leffler's endocarditis. Changes in the volume of the ventricles of the heart;
  • cholangitis. Inflammation of the bile ducts;
  • strabismus in children.

It is carried out only under the strict supervision of a specialist. All medications are properly checked for possible reactions of the body, and a scheme for the upcoming treatment is individually drawn up.

  1. Zentel. Not only inhibits the vital activity of roundworms by disrupting glucose synthesis, but also removes them. Begins to affect worms already 2 hours after ingestion. With toxocariasis, the daily dose is 2 tablets in the morning and before bedtime. Duration of admission is from 5 to 10 days. A repetition of the course is possible.
  2. "Vermox". It copes well with adults, but does not affect the larvae in any way. Accepted up to 14 days. The daily dose is 5-10 mg per 1 kg of body weight. Take in the morning, lunchtime and before bedtime.
  3. Albendazole. There is a need for a second course. Duration of admission is from 10 to 15 days. Take 5-10 mg / kg of body weight 2 times per day. Drink plenty of water, do not chew. In case of damage to the retina, it is forbidden to treat roundworms with this drug.
  4. Chewable tablets "Nemozol". 400 mg twice a day. Duration of admission is 1-2 weeks.

Take special care when choosing antihelminthic drugs. Consultation of an experienced doctor is obligatory.
