Like any other organ of the human body, the eye is often affected by parasites. Depending on the type of parasite, diseases that affect the body of the eye, the optic nerve, and the membranes of the eye differ. In addition to worms, worms and fly larvae can live in the eye.

So, you can highlight:

  1. opisthorchiasis;
  2. echinococcosis;
  3. dirofilariasis;
  4. ophthalmomyasis (internal, external).

Echinococcosis - human infection with echinococcus eggs. They are concentrated in the intestines. After the larva leaves the egg, the bloodstream carries the parasites throughout the body. Worms can get into the liver, lungs, muscles, eyes. Once there, the larva begins to form an echinococcal bladder. It is constantly increasing, it is a favorable environment for the development of adults. If there are parasites in the eye, orbital disease is most common.

Symptoms can be considered exophthalmos of the eyeball (it seems to shift, bulge out), the upper eyelid becomes thinner and stretched. Since the bubble is behind the orbit of the eye, it displaces it, taking up more and more space.

Diagnostics is carried out using an ultrasound machine. If the worm is removed in time, then the eyeball will soon be in place, there will be no noticeable consequences of the transferred disease. If the disease is noticed too late and the parasite has damaged the eye muscle, complete restoration of the eye, alas, is impossible.

As a result of a mosquito bite, a parasite enters the human bloodstream, which actively moves under the human skin. The disease begins to develop actively only a month after the bite. All this time, the incubation period lasts. After that, the individual actively migrates through the human body. On average, the parasite passes about fifteen centimeters per day. Outwardly, it looks like a small pimple moving to different places.

If the parasite dies prematurely, the patient feels a rise in temperature, chills, possibly local inflammation in the place where the individual was. If she managed to get to the eye, the patient feels severe pain, aggravated by blinking, photophobia, redness and irritation of the inner surface of the eyelids. A very painful small lump can be seen on the mucous membrane.

Diagnostics is difficult, several types of clinical studies are required. Treatment consists of timely removal of the parasite from the eye. If the treatment is not carried out on time, you can lose your eye.

Ophthalmomyasis

Fly larvae with blood flow into any organs of the human body. Most often, when the larvae enter the eye, they are there for a short time, as soon as the initial phase of maturation begins, they leave the organ and move to another place. If this does not happen, the larva has reached the last phase of maturity, and ophthalmomyasis develops. It can be indoor or outdoor.

The developing parasites cause inflammation of the eye tissues, subcutaneous nodules resembling a boil are formed. The patient can feel the movement of the larvae in the eye, in some cases this movement can be seen with the naked eye. Conjunctivitis is common. All parasites must be removed for a successful recovery.

Treatment for external myiasis consists in removing larvae and damaged tissues that can no longer be restored. If this is not done, the inflammation will spread and invade more and more new tissues. Additionally, you should take antihistamines (relieve edema, reduce an allergic reaction in humans), anti-inflammatory drugs. Detoxification is also important.

If the larva got in and began to develop inside the eye, this causes a serious condition that damages the optic nerves and blood vessels. The disease can proceed completely unnoticed. The course of the disease is complicated by a sharp decrease in visual acuity, possibly even the onset of complete blindness. Treatment is most often surgical.

Prevention of eye damage by helminths

Helminthiasis is a disease that affects a large number of people. Despite the fact that not all worms can parasitize in humans, about a third of people suffer from this disease. Most often, children become infected if basic hygiene rules are not followed.

Treatment of the disease is difficult and quite lengthy. To completely destroy the source of infection, several repetitions of the course of treatment are often required. Therefore, it is very important to constantly follow the rules of prevention.

It is important to follow the rules of hygiene when you have pets. In addition to the necessary vaccinations, all dogs and cats should be given prophylactic antihelminthic drugs two to three times a year. After contact with an animal, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands with a disinfectant.

You should also carefully monitor the condition of the hands and cleanliness under the nails. Children who are constantly in contact with sand require special attention. It is best if the nails are cut short. This makes them easier to clean.

The meat and fish that will be consumed must be purchased only from reliable representatives and must be of high quality. This does not cancel heat treatment. The tissues of underfried fish can be a source of opisthorchiasis, and beef with blood can cause infection with bovine tapeworm.

Drinking water also has high requirements. You can not drink from stagnant reservoirs, unknown springs. The tap water should be additionally boiled. Swimming is inadmissible in those reservoirs where animals are watered and bathed.

If at least one of the symptoms of the presence of parasites in the eyes of a person is found, an urgent need to consult a doctor. Self-medication will not bring any result, and will lead to a loss of time, which can lead to a complete loss of vision.
