Worms appeared on our planet long before the appearance of not only Homo sapiens, but also humans in general. They survived the dinosaurs, the Flood did not wash them into oblivion, the Ice Age did not destroy them.

These creatures turned out to be so tenacious that they adapted to living in different environments. Aquatic species of worms were formed, earth groups, even ice ones, arose.

The most cunning forms have adapted to existence in foreign bodies, in other words, they began to parasitize. Indeed, why freeze in the ice, get food in a swamp or bother in the ground. It is much more convenient to live on everything ready-made, in pleasant dampness and comfortable warmth.

Fossilized pinworm eggs have been found in human waste products dating back 9,000 years. The first descriptions were made by the Egyptians. Papyri on this topic date from the 15th century BC.

The founder of medicine Hippocrates also did not fail to enter the parasite into the register, and even the philosopher and thinker Aristotle did not disdain to classify helminths, dividing them into 3 subspecies, where the pinworm took the first place.

Causes of the disease

Enterobiasis in children and adults occurs when helminth eggs enter their body. Invasion occurs through contact with an infected person. The carrier of the infection, often without knowing it, leaves eggs on household items, food, and clothing. A person in contact with him will be infected with a high degree of probability.

From eggs that have fallen into a person, larvae appear, which, after a certain time, grow into worms. Outwardly, adults look like a thin white thread with narrowed ends. The size of an adult female reaches 12 mm. Males are more modest, their length does not exceed 7 mm.

Having reached sexual maturity, they crawl out through the anus and lay eggs in the perineum, where humidity and temperature represent the ideal environment for laying. This happens mainly at night when the sphincter muscles are relaxed.

Females, after fulfilling their parental duty, die, and their offspring causes itching. The infected person is constantly scratching, bringing eggs under the nails. After that, together with food, they enter the body. The circle has closed, it can only be broken by treatment.

Symptoms of enterobiasis

Symptoms of enterobiasis in adults depend on the general condition of the infected person and the degree of invasion. In most cases, the disease does not manifest itself at all and is discovered by chance. As a rule, with an outside examination.

More advanced enterobiasis in adults has the following symptoms:

  • itching in the anus;
  • constant gassing;
  • frequent urge to urinate;
  • headaches;
  • nervous disorders;
  • inflammation of the genital mucosa in women;
  • diarrhea;
  • troubled sleep.

In terms of severity, the disease is divided into three groups: mild, moderate and severe. A mild invasion is characterized by a complete absence of symptoms or minor manifestations. This means that a small amount of pinworms has entered the body, which cannot do much harm.

The stage of moderate severity has signs such as recurrent itching in the anus, mild abdominal pain, dizziness.

Diagnosis of enterobiasis

Treatment of enterobiasis in adults begins with diagnosis. Carrying out it is not particularly difficult. The preliminary stage of the study can be carried out independently, it is better to do it in the morning.

The procedure is as follows: they take a cotton swab wound on a match or a plastic rod, make scraping movements around the anus, and then place it in a closed container and give it for analysis.

The role of the tampon can be played by special adhesive tape, which should also be taken to the laboratory. For a guaranteed diagnosis, scraping should be carried out at least 3 times.

Employees of preschool institutions, school teachers, people who have been in places with poor sanitary conditions must be screened for the presence of the parasite without fail.

As soon as a person has enterobiasis, symptoms and signs appear, treatment in adults and their families should be started immediately. It is not recommended to treat enterobiasis on your own.

The surest way to get rid of the infection is to go to the hospital. The attending physician will prescribe treatment, prescribe the necessary medications, and determine the dosage. If necessary, he will offer hospital treatment.

In the treatment of enterobiasis, the following drugs are used:

  1. mebendazole is a medicine that can act on the helminth at the cellular level, which leads to irreversible consequences and the death of the worm. The drug should be used 3 times a day for three weeks;
  2. pyrantel - affects the muscle fibers of the worm, causing their paralysis and death of the helminth. The drug is safe, its use is possible during pregnancy and lactation;
  3. albendazole - affects the digestive organs of nematodes, blocking the absorption of glucose by them, which leads to the destruction of cells and death of the parasite. The drug acts on adults and larvae. It can be used by both adults and children. The dosage is determined by the doctor and depends on the degree of invasion and the general condition of the patient.

Simultaneously with the use of anthelmintic drugs, therapy is carried out aimed at restoring the intestinal microflora and its normal functionality. A patient cured in this way must pass scrapings three times. A negative test within two weeks indicates a complete cure.
