Features of the disease
The pinworm is a small white helminth (parasitic worm), the length of which reaches from 2 to 10 mm.
Pinworm larvae and eggs can only be seen under a microscope. Most often they live in the appendix or cecum, feed on substances contained in the intestines.
The parasite crawls out through the anus and lays eggs on the human skin, mainly in the anus, causing severe itching. Sometimes eggs are carried by flies, dust or cockroaches. Most often, the eggs fall under the child's nails and are swallowed.
The causes of enterobiasis
Only people can carry the disease, since the life cycle of the pinworm occurs exclusively in the human body. Therefore, enterobiasis is a disease of dirty hands.
Parasite eggs can be transmitted through physical contact, for example, when shaking hands, as well as when using household items with which an infectious person has come into contact.
Helminth eggs may be present:
- on clothes, especially underwear; on items of dishes and furniture;
- in the dust of carpets;
- on the surface of toys;
- in bed;
- on the money.
Infection can occur when eating unwashed vegetables and fruits, as well as when visiting questionable establishments that do not meet sanitary requirements. Children under 2 years old can be infected if their parents do not follow the rules of hygiene.
Pinworm symptoms
Pinworms have a negative effect on the child's nervous system, you can notice changes in his behavior and intellectual abilities.
The main features are:
- itching and unpleasant sensations in the anus. Discomfort is usually observed in the evening and at night, and with a mass invasion, it is constant. With the initial infection, itching disappears within 3 days;
- redness of the skin;
- traces of scratching;
- soreness of the abdomen;
- intestinal dysbiosis;
- allergic reactions (dermatitis, conjunctivitis);
- frequent bowel movements (up to 4 times a day);
- loose stools, possibly with mucus
- sudden mood swings, poor memory, distraction, excessive irritability;
- memory impairment;
- frequent headaches;
- nausea and lack of appetite;
- restless sleep
- with a severe degree of the disease, secondary infection of combed skin is possible;
- pain in the perineum and genitals.
How to define enterobiasis in infants?
Usually the child has:
- increased interest in the genitals and the anal passage (redness and scratching in this area are possible);
- poor sleep, increased tearfulness and anxiety;
- skin rashes may occur.
Signs of a severe stage of enterobiasis in adults:
- enuresis at night;
- itching in the genital area;
- bloating;
- dizziness;
- pain in the appendix;
- in rare cases, fainting is possible.
Diagnosis of enterobiasis:
- If you experience symptoms of parasites, you should consult a specialist. As a diagnosis, scraping of the anal folds is prescribed, which allows you to detect pinworm eggs. Also, most likely, a microscopic examination of feces will be carried out, but it is practically not informative, since the probability of finding eggs is less than 5%.
- A study for enterobiasis must be performed during admission to the hospital, before going to sanatoriums and summer camps, as well as before admission to kindergarten and for classes in the pool.
Features of treatment in adults
The disease is easily amenable to medical therapy, it is very effective to treat enterobiasis in 3 stages:
- destruction of pinworms (drugs are prescribed by the attending specialist);
- restoration of flora using sorbents (stage 2 is recommended to be carried out after 2 hours);
- cleansing the intestines from worms (in the evening they drink a laxative).
Mebendazole is an active substance against worms, it is included in most parasite remedies.
To destroy pinworms, appoint:
- Mebendazole (in tablets or suspension). Agelmin, Vermox, Telmox 100, Anitiox, Vormin, Vermakar, Mebex, Vero-Mebendazole.
- Albendazole is a very effective drug against pinworms and is the active substance of drugs: Aldazol, Nemozol, Gelmadol and Zentel, which are actively used in modern therapy.
- Before treating women of reproductive age, it is necessary to exclude the possibility of pregnancy, since most drugs can affect the intrauterine development of the child.
Treatment of enterobiasis in children
Treatment of the disease of enterobiasis in children from 2 years old is carried out using the same drugs against helminths as in adults.
If the child is one or two years old, it is possible to use 10 mg of Nemizole suspension or Albendazole tablets.
Compliance with the hygiene regime is an important element of treatment.
Which includes:
- washing hands thoroughly with soap after each visit to the toilet and contact with money;
- the use of antiseptics;
- frequent change of bed linen and clothes;
- regular personal body hygiene;
- heat treatment of linen with an iron and washing;
- regular nail trimming.
If children attending school or kindergarten become infected, treatment is prescribed to all team members and employees of the institution.
For convenience, cotton swabs and underpants with elastic bands on the thighs should be used to prevent scattering of pinworm eggs. Enterobiasis can be cured!
