Brief characteristics of the parasite

Giardia is a harmful microorganism that lives within the small intestine or in the liver. The flagellate parasite can cause irritation or inflammation in the intestines and upset the gastrointestinal tract.

When the helminth enters the child's body, it sheds the shell and becomes lamblia. Parasites are equipped with flagella and a disc for sucking on the intestinal walls. To reproduce, parasites require nutrients and trace elements, which they receive directly from the blood of the child. As a result, the child's immunity decreases, and vitamin deficiency may occur.

Harmful microorganisms are divided into two types: mobile and immobile.

Parasites multiply by division. Stool analysis often does not help to identify the disease, because Giardia leaves with the child's feces and exists for up to half an hour, and then die.

How does infection occur

There are several ways of infection with giardiasis, parasites appear in the sand or earth, they can exist on dishes, children's toys.

Insufficiently processed vegetables and fruits, kitchen utensils can also be sources of infection. Raw water can contain lamblia, and the parasites can also be transmitted through breast milk.

At risk are babies who attend kindergartens, due to close contact with other children. Insufficiently filtered tap water can carry not only lamblia, but also other microorganisms.

Clinical symptoms of the disease

The manifested giardiasis in childhood implies a very severe course of it.

The main symptoms of the disease are:

  • a sharp increase in body temperature, chills;
  • prolonged diarrhea;
  • pain in the abdomen;
  • nausea and vomiting, for a long time;
  • weight loss;
  • dry cough;
  • grinding teeth, mainly at night;
  • rashes of the skin, similar to allergic reactions;
  • fast, causeless fatigue;
  • swollen lymph nodes without throat redness.

Treatment of giardiasis

Unlike other parasites, Giardia is treated somewhat more difficult.

Diagnosis of the disease is carried out on the basis of an analysis of urine, blood and feces, anamnesis of changes in the child's condition, as well as palpation of the abdomen. Then a comprehensive examination is carried out, which will help to draw up a complete picture of the infection.

Feces collection is an ineffective test for detecting helminths, but some doctors prescribe this test. Here you need to follow some rules: the material must be handed over immediately after leaving the body, and the time of collection of the biomaterial must be indicated on the container.

Treatment includes several stages:

Compliance with a diet. It is necessary to exclude spicy and fatty foods from the child's diet, reduce the amount of sweets consumed to a minimum. Eat vegetables and fruits that do not cause bloating. During the treatment period, the child should be given more cereals on the water. Meals should be in small portions several times a day, the exposure between meals should be at least 4 hours.

Treatment with medications. All medicines should be prescribed exclusively by the attending physician, let us highlight the main ones: flamin, furazolidone, metronidazole, albendazole, etc. The average course is 5-10 days. It should be remembered that drugs can cause many side effects, therefore, when taking drugs, you must carefully monitor the child's condition.

The recovery phase takes approximately two weeks. This implies the intake of sorbents to remove toxins from the body, as well as the intake of agents that increase immunity.

A few days after the start of taking anthelmintic drugs, the child's condition may deteriorate markedly. This phenomenon is natural, because the effect of drugs leads to the death and decay of parasites in the body.

Treatment with folk remedies also takes place. These can be special cucumber infusions, aspen broth, infusions from celandine plants, the use of bergamot oil, a decoction of dandelion roots, etc. However, traditional medicine will bring the greatest benefit in alliance with drug treatment.

Baby care during illness

To avoid the return of helminths, you must strictly follow all the rules of personal hygiene of the child. Nails should be clipped, feeding is done from individual dishes (it should be disinfected), after contact with a child, hands should be thoroughly washed (especially after changing clothes or diapers).

After the treatment course, some of the symptoms may still appear as restoration of intestinal functions takes time.

Prevention of giardiasis

If helminths are found in a child or in a group of children, the sick baby should be isolated, he and all family members should undergo a medical examination.

Initial prevention measures are as follows:

  • intensively wash vegetables and fruits, it is better to pour over boiling water;
  • use exclusively treated water (boiling, filtration);
  • teach the baby to observe personal hygiene as early as possible;
  • exclude bad habits (thumb sucking, nail biting, etc.);
  • you should refuse to swim in unknown waters;
  • allow games only in sandboxes of this type, in which sand is regularly changed;
  • to minimize contact with animals, and if possible, completely exclude.

If changes are noticed in the child's body, it is necessary to visit the doctor as soon as possible, in order to avoid consequences in the future. The sooner the diagnosis occurs, the fewer helminths in the body will have time to multiply.

It should be remembered that parasites can skillfully disguise themselves as other diseases.
