The protein enzyme GGT takes part in the exchange of amino acids, it is found in organs such as the liver, kidneys and pancreas. I use it as an indicator in the research of these organs, to identify problems with them. This substance accumulates in other internal organs, but it is the liver or kidneys that cause the deviation from the norm.

What is GGT and its functions

For starters, it's worth noting that GGT and GGTP (gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase) are the same concepts, and the use of both terms is equally correct.

Glutamyltransferase has a protein structure and is involved in the exchange of amino acids. Thanks to him, the exchange and transfer of amino acid bonds is accelerated, and when they are destroyed, they immediately enter the bloodstream. During the entire time of the body's work, the cells are constantly renewed, and a certain percentage of this protein is always present in the blood. If internal organs fail, cell breakdown collapses, and as a result, GGT in the blood can be either increased or decreased. To find out for sure, you will have to take blood tests for liver enzymes, including GGT analysis.

The main source of GGTP is the liver. An increase in enzyme activity is observed when:

  • liver diseases;
  • pancreatitis and pancreatic tumors;
  • intoxications of alcohol, drugs or other medicinal preparations.

It is these proteins that strongly react to liver damage, for example, if alcohol is poured into the body, more rapid destruction of liver cells occurs, and more and more GGTP is released into the blood. If a person manages to live a month without alcohol, the level of this substance in the blood will drop.

What is GGT in a biochemical blood test?

Now, understanding the aforementioned protein is not difficult, GGTP shows the exchange of amino acids in the body, if healthy cells are destroyed, it means that blood serum is increased. That is, with the help of the analysis, you will find out if the work of the liver or other internal organs is impaired.

If a person is concerned about the following factors, you should undergo a GGTP blood test:

  • bouts of nausea;
  • frequent vomiting;
  • loss of appetite;
  • pain in the right hypochondrium;
  • allergy to medicines;
  • prevention of the liver;
  • assessment of the condition of the kidneys after the intervention of the surgeon, or a problem with their work.

A patient who complains of kidney pain may be referred for blood donation, since hepatitis C, cholestasis, cholangitis or cholecystitis may develop.

GGT analysis will also show the causes of bile stagnation, which will help to prescribe more correct treatment. This research is especially necessary for people suffering from chronic alcoholism, knowing the degree of dependence and the level of liver damage, a person can save a life.

GGT rate in human blood

Gamma glutamyltranspeptidase, the rate of which depends on the sex and age of the person, differs in women and men, but not too much. A completely different case in adolescents and newborns.

The GGT norm for people is as follows:

  • in men, indicators are up to 49 U / l;
  • and for women up to 32 U / l;
  • in newborns, GGT is increased by 2-4 times.

The norm for a biochemical ggt blood test in adults ranges from 6 to 70 units per liter of blood, do not forget that girls have a lower rate than men. If we talk about children, then their indicators can jump to 185/1 l of blood, half-year-olds will show 200 U / l. For children, such results are acceptable, so there is no need to worry, all due to the fact that their liver is not yet able to produce the enzyme.

We have already understood that blood GGT depends on age, then a table with the test results for both women (F) and for men (M) will be given.

Age Norm
5 days after delivery Closeness 185 units. per liter
5 days to 6 months Not more than 202 units. per liter
From 6 months up to 1 g. 34 units
1-3 years Closeness 18 units.
3-6 years old Not more than 22 units.
6-12 years old 16 units
12-17 years old Not higher than 33 units.
18 and older 6-42 units

During pregnancy

1st trimester 0-17 units
2nd trimester Up to 33 units.
3rd trimester 32 units per liter

Protein levels can rise sharply, but temporarily, which is not a bad thing. Such a jump depends on the use of many vitamins by the expectant mother.

For representatives of the stronger sex, the numbers will be higher:

Age Norm
5 days after delivery Not higher than 185 units. per liter
5 days to 6 months Not more than 202 units. per liter
From 6 months up to 1 g. Close 34 units.
1-3 years Up to 18 units
3-6 years old Not more than 22 units.
6-12 years old 16 units
12-17 years old Not higher than 45 units.
18 and older 10-71 units

The prostate gland contains more enzyme for the male sex, a strong increase in GGT in the blood warns of a deviation in the work of internal organs.

Reasons for deviation of gamma GT

The sample is taken directly from a vein, and a blood test can take hours, or even a day. The person gets the result on specials. a form that the doctor will explain. Correct decoding depends on the patient correctly followed the rules, before preparing for the test. In case of deviations, the reasons may be as follows:

  1. the content of many ascorbic acid in the body;
  2. effects from aspirin or paracetamol;
  3. too frequent use of hormonal contraceptives;
  4. the use of antidepressants;
  5. hepatitis;
  6. diabetes;
  7. rheumatoid arthritis;
  8. autoimmune pathologies;
  9. liver cancer, death of its tissues;
  10. jaundice;
  11. lupus erythematosus;
  12. malignant tumor passing into the liver.

In cases with a decrease, this can be facilitated by drugs to lower cholesterol, treatment of alcohol dependence.

It is the attending physician who must interpret the blood test, if a person himself understands what is what, you still need to contact a specialist, since there is a risk of harming yourself. There have been cases when the patient was prescribed additional. research for a more accurate result.

GGT increase or decrease (if it is insignificant, you do not need to worry), require medical supervision in any case, do not neglect this, and try to cope with the problem on your own.

How to prepare for testing?

In order to avoid false results, it is advised to follow certain measures during preparation. Follow the instructions below, so that your analyzes are more accurate, and will help to correctly diagnose the disease:

  • donate blood on an empty stomach, do not eat or drink absolutely nothing, 8-10 hours before testing. The procedure is carried out in the morning when the body is hungry;
  • 24-48 hours before donating blood, do not eat fatty, spicy and too fried foods, they can increase the indicators;
  • do not go in for sports and physical. loads, for 2 days, as this can also affect the result;
  • the day before, it is not recommended to take baths, saunas or hot baths;
  • give up alcohol and cigarettes a day before the upcoming procedure;
  • 48 hours before delivery, stop using any medications, if for some reason this is not possible, tell your doctor what he means;
  • come to donate blood without shortness of breath and nerves, wake up in the room for 15 minutes, so that the body gets used to its temperature.

Disease prevention:

  • rest during the day, especially if your work day is constantly stressful;
  • do not overdo it with physical activity;
  • give up alcohol and cigarettes;
  • balance your diet;
  • do not overcool or overheat the body;
  • avoid stress, both in joy and in anger;
  • go in for sports (running, horizontal bar, cycling, etc.)
  • Take blood tests at least once a year.

Follow the advice (if not all, then at least most) and you will save yourself from most of the diseases.
