What is Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is an infectious disease caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. This unicellular microorganism has a wave-like membrane and special flagella on its body, which allow Trichomonas to actively move, penetrating into the intercellular spaces.
It should also be noted that Trichomonas is an anaerobic creature, which significantly expands the area of its distribution.
The available statistics of the disease show that in the overwhelming majority of cases the disease develops in combination with other diseases, most often among which chlamydia and gonorrhea occur.
In the form of monoinfection, trichomoniasis is diagnosed only in every tenth case. Modern research shows that the spread of this infection is possible only through sexual contact. And only in exceptional cases, the transmission of the disease is possible through the use of hygiene products or underwear of the carrier of the disease. Moreover, the risk of transmission of infection through sexual contact exceeds 80 percent. No other genital infection has such a high transmission rate.
Prerequisites for the development of trichomoniasis
However, for the development of trichomoniasis, there are a number of other prerequisites in a woman's body:
- the postpartum period, when the expansion of the muscles of the cervix leads to a natural violation of mechanical protection;
- menstrual and postmenstrual periods, accompanied by fluctuations in the acidity of the vaginal contents (for Trichomonas, the optimal acidity of the vaginal contents is the range of 5.5-6.6 pH);
- abortion, which provokes changes in the body that contribute to the occurrence of trichomoniasis;
- orgasm, during which the uterine cavity is prone to "absorption" of the causative agent of the disease.
Trichomoniasis: symptoms and first signs of the disease
In the acute form of the course of the disease, dirty green discharge with an unpleasant odor appears, and may be accompanied by severe pain in the lower abdomen and genitals. If there is no adequate treatment, the acute form of the disease becomes chronic. As we have already noted, in some cases there is a sluggish development and course of the disease of trichomoniasis, while the symptoms are of a mild nature.
This is a very unpleasant situation, because the infected person does not even suspect that he "picked up" such a nuisance and will not be able to receive the necessary treatment on time. In the course of this course of the disease, a person becomes an unwitting cause of the spread of a harmful microorganism and infects his sexual partners.
The course of inflammation and the clinical picture of the disease can be influenced by various factors of an individual nature, the characteristics of the patient's body, the level of his immunity, the intensity of the inflammation itself, the behavior of the bacteria, the state of the mucous membranes of the genital organs and their microflora.
The most common symptom of the disease is profuse discharge from the urethra and vagina when the genitourinary system is affected. And it is in women that trichomoniasis has pronounced signs and such symptoms help to make an accurate diagnosis of the disease.
Trichomonas. Important! Carrying out high-quality diagnostics is the key to timely and successful treatment, since its main symptoms may be similar to other diseases.
Other symptoms of the disease
It is worth remembering that in trichomoniasis, the period of its incubation development can last up to a month, during which the disease will not manifest itself in any way. The patient during the incubation course of the disease does not know about the infection, but he himself is a carrier and distributor of pathogenic microflora. It can infect other people through sexual contact - the main route of transmission of the disease is sexual.
Trichomonas. In the practice of doctors, the disease manifests itself quite clearly and sharply, although situations are not excluded in which the symptoms show themselves sluggishly or do not manifest themselves at all. As a rule, this can be an incubation period, but also a manifestation of a chronic, asymptomatic form of pathology, or the disease manifests itself as minor symptoms.
But this does not exclude the need to be examined and diagnosed by a doctor, to pass all tests. This is extremely necessary, first of all, for you and your partner, when you are insecure about your sexual partner, suspect infection through household items, a latent, latent period of the course of the disease.
It is worth remembering that if one of the partners has characteristic symptoms, then both must be diagnosed. In addition, for this period, sexual intercourse should be excluded in order to avoid possible infection.
As soon as the first alarming symptoms appear, any woman needs to see a gynecologist as soon as possible.
Diagnostics provides for the following minimum:
- identification of complaints;
- gynecological examination;
On examination, the doctor looks for signs of inflammation. The presence or absence of Trichomonas in a smear will show the presence of the disease, this is enough to determine the diagnosis. If the presence of this microorganism is confirmed, then another test for trichomoniasis will be prescribed to determine the sensitivity of the microbe to antibiotics.
Trichomoniasis in women and manifestations of trichomonas vaginitis
Trichomoniasis in women is more pronounced than in men, in whom, most often, the course of the disease is asymptomatic.
The main signs of an infection in the female body are:
- swelling of the genitals, redness;
- the appearance of small manifestations, accompanied by bleeding;
- discharge of an intense nature, which over time, acquire dirty greenish shades and an unpleasant odor.
Such discharge is a symptom that trichomoniasis in women has passed the incubation period, and profuse inflammation has begun. Vaginal discharge has another negative factor - they can corrode the mucous membranes of the genital organs, which leads to the formation of small ulcers, with pain, severe discomfort, burning sensation when urinating, itching.
In some cases, such irritations spread to the inner side of the thigh, and bleeding from the vagina also develops. Note that painful sensations can manifest themselves not only during urination and intercourse, but also spread to the lower abdomen and back. Trichomoniasis is in women and its symptoms help the doctor understand which area is affected by the infection. For example, if the discharge comes from the vagina and is accompanied by pain in the lower abdomen, during urination and intercourse, this indicates an infection of the vagina.
Trichomonas. If the symptoms are more pronounced in the genitourinary system, that is, problems arise during urination, then this indicates that the infection has affected the bladder, urinary tract. Trichomonas quite rarely affects the internal genital organs - the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries. Due to the fact that nature itself has taken care that the internal organs are thoroughly protected from various kinds of infections, it is extremely difficult to infect them.
But, if during abortion, childbirth, during menstruation, these natural barriers were damaged, then infection can also affect the internal genital organs. If such a case takes place, it can lead to the development of one of the most serious diseases - endometritis, inflammation of the uterus, which gives rise to the development of even more complex diseases of the female reproductive system.
Before prescribing a treatment regimen, an analysis is required to confirm the presence of an infection in the body
Treatment of infection in women is prescribed only by a doctor and prescribes a special antibiotic, local suppositories. During therapy, different forms of drugs can be used, it can be an injection solution, a tablet.
Trichomonas. Trichomonas vaginitis is an inflammatory process that affects the walls of the vagina and is sexually transmitted. In principle, the vaginal microflora is able to independently cope with all sorts of infections. But if there are a number of factors that negatively affect the body and contribute to a decrease in the level of immunity and protective functions, then the infection passes without obstacles.
Trichomonas vaginitis main routes of infection:
- promiscuous sex life;
- weak immunity;
- the presence of constant stress and nervous tension, which leads to a weakening of the properties of the natural microflora in the vagina;
- undergoing a course of therapy using antibiotics and hormones, which are also capable of changing the state of microflora and mucous membranes;
- natural hormonal disruption.
After the infection enters the body, it infects the vagina and then the glands. The symptoms of the disease are:
- profuse, foul-smelling vaginal discharge (sometimes with pus);
- itching and severe irritation of the perineum;
- swelling of the vagina;
- painful sensations during intercourse;
- problems with urination.
These symptoms occur after Trichomonas vaginitis has already passed from the incubation period to the acute, inflammatory phase. Most often, these symptoms occur immediately after the end of the menstrual cycle.
Trichomoniasis treatment methods
When diagnosing such a diagnosis as trichomoniasis, you should not practice self-treatment, relying on the opinion of friends, the Internet and traditional medicine. This will only aggravate the course of the disease, launch it, allowing it to go into a chronic form of the course. Today, this disease responds well to treatment - a timely visit to a doctor, undergoing a full course of treatment will allow in the future not to have an opening with health and continue to lead an active, full life.
Trichomonas. Trichomoniasis in women necessarily requires treatment. Preparations, the scheme of their use is regulated by the doctor depending on the age of the patient, concomitant diseases and the stage of this ailment. Antibiotics are not prescribed, since Trichomonas are resistant to them, therefore, anti-inflammatory drugs are used.
Such tablets are used for trichomoniasis in women:
Candles are also used for trichomoniasis:
Suppositories for trichomoniasis for women are considered very effective and without local treatment of this ailment is simply necessary. To achieve an early therapeutic effect, vaginal gels are also used.
The treatment regimen for trichomoniasis in women may consist of a combination of several anti-inflammatory and antibacterial drugs, with the addition of drugs to raise immunity and restore the vaginal microflora.
For treatment, doctors resort to prescribing such funds:
- antibacterial pills that are used for at least 10 days;
- suppositories and gels for topical treatment;
- preparations and suppositories that restore the microflora in the vagina;
- immunomodulatory supplements.
The treatment regimen, both for the initial stage and for the chronic form, may be the same, but in the latter case, you will have to undergo several courses to completely get rid of the disease.
Home treatment is carried out only to maintain the effect of the medication prescribed by the doctor. Often, various recipes are used to help increase immunity, which is reduced due to trichomoniasis. Such an addition will always be appropriate and will help the fastest recovery.
Baths and douching from sage and chamomile tinctures have proven themselves well. It is worth remembering that any treatment for Trichomonas in women at home should be agreed with the doctor.
If all this is taken into account, then it is possible to identify the disease at an early stage and quickly cure it, taking into account all the doctor's prescriptions and adding alternative methods.
Trichomoniasis: treatment with drugs and folk remedies
Having diagnosed the disease of trichomoniasis, treatment is carried out not only in relation to the most infected person, but also to his sexual partner (s), to prevent the risk of re-disease.
Today, trichomoniasis can be treated in several ways. This infection is almost not amenable to therapy with conventional antimicrobial drugs, so it is necessary to prescribe special anti-trichomonas drugs, thanks to which you can quickly and effectively get rid of the disease. Note that the body does not develop resistance to this harmful organism. Therefore, re-infection is also possible. The treatment regimen is developed and assigned individually, and for both sexual partners at once, which significantly reduces the risk of re-infection.
Trichomonas. The sick are prescribed treatment with Trichopolum (4 tablets) and sex life is prohibited for 1 week. With the second method of treatment, which lasts a little longer, Trichopolum is taken at 500 mg for 1 week and for 2 weeks, there is no sexual activity. If one of the compiled treatment regimens does not give positive results, the doctor prescribes a second one.
Therapy with the use of special-purpose drugs is carried out only on the prescription of a doctor and under his supervision, since this category of drugs causes a lot of side effects, many provoke individual intolerance by patients. Treatment of trichomoniasis in women may be accompanied by the use of topical agents to treat the vagina and cervix. In the treatment of men, these drugs are not effective.
After the main treatment with medicines has been carried out, a follow-up examination is carried out after a few weeks to confirm the results of the therapy. It is advisable to conduct the examination again after a few months to avoid the risk of re-infection. As for traditional methods of treatment, their use is carried out only under the supervision and on the recommendation of a doctor.
Moreover, only after drug treatment, as reinforcing methods and preventive measures. Using only traditional methods of treatment will not give effective results, and self-medication will lead to a deterioration of the condition and the overflow of the disease into a chronic form, when complications and consequences in the form of other inflammatory diseases are possible.
Consequences and complications of trichomoniasis
Untimely diagnosis and treatment of trichomoniasis can lead to very serious consequences. The overflow of the disease into chronic trichomoniasis and the further absence of medical intervention often leads to the following problems:
- frigidity and lack of orgasms;
- impairment of reproductive functions (inflammation of the uterine appendages and obstruction of the fallopian tubes);
- the occurrence of malignant processes in the cervix;
- complications during pregnancy that provoke premature birth or miscarriage.
In addition, a number of scientists argue that trichomoniasis may be an indirect cause of the development of diabetes mellitus, mastopathy, oncological formations on the female genital organs and allergic manifestations, but there is no reliable laboratory confirmation of these assumptions at this point and they require additional research.
Trichomoniasis during pregnancy
Trichomoniasis during childbearing is also worth mentioning. Diagnosing an infection during pregnancy is not a prerequisite for terminating it. Although the disease can cause complications during the antenatal period, patients are prescribed a standard course of treatment.
The only change compared to the standard protocol is the need to exclude the use of metronidazole in the first trimester of pregnancy. That is, the course of treatment for trichomoniasis should be carried out no earlier than the second trimester.
There are also statistics according to which in five percent of cases of trichomoniasis in a pregnant woman is transmitted to her child. But the structural features of the newborn's epithelium are such that the infection in his body is mild and in most cases heals itself.
Prevention of trichomoniasis
Trichomonas. These factors indicate that in order to prevent this disease, it is necessary to strictly follow a number of recommendations, which, however, does not contain anything supernatural:
- culture of sexual relations;
- in the presence of inconsistent sexual partners, the use of exclusively barrier contraceptives;
- high culture of intimate hygiene, excluding the use of underwear and hygiene products of other people;
- regular medical examinations, which you need to undergo at least six months.
In addition, there is a fairly effective method of one-time prevention of trichomoniasis after accidental sexual intercourse without using a barrier contraceptive. It consists in the introduction of five milliliters of miramistin solution into the vagina and external treatment of the genitals with antiseptics.
Doing so will reduce the risk of Trichomonas transmission by 70 percent. But at the same time, doctors strongly recommend avoiding situations where such emergency therapy is needed.
