The unknown coronavirus that is raging in China is one of the most talked about and worrying topics in global health today.

According to the latest data, the number of cases is 218 people, three have died. But British scientists call another figure - 1723 people.

The World Health Organization has appointed an emergency meeting of the emergency committee. A day earlier, WHO issued a statement that it is unclear how the virus is transmitted and what its "natural reservoir" is.

Chinese doctors, in turn, confirmed the possibility of transmission of the new virus from person to person.

In the United States, they began to invent a vaccine for the disease. In the near future, Russia will release an express test to detect infection. Epidemiological control measures have been strengthened at many airports in the world. The Russian authorities are still silent.

What is Coronavirus? Distribution, symptoms, treatment

Today's convening of the emergency committee of WHO was preceded by a statement by the organization. It noted that it is not yet clear how the virus is transmitted and what its natural reservoir is.

The World Health Organization has called on all countries of the world to prepare for the possible widespread spread of coronavirus. At the same time, she spoke out against the introduction of restrictions on travel to and trade with China.

The Chinese themselves are less optimistic. A new type of unknown disease is spreading in large cities: in Beijing (in the north of the country), Shanghai (in the east) and Shenzhen (in the south).

The first case of the disease was reported in December in the central part of the country, in the city of Wuhan. He was initially mistaken for pneumonia. But later it turned out that the cause of the disease was a previously unknown type of severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by coronavirus infection.

Isolated cases of infection were recorded in Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

On January 20, Chinese scientists from the National Health Commission made an official conclusion regarding the coronavirus. They voiced a frightening fact - the infection is transmitted from person to person (which increases the risk of widespread spread).

Chinese President Xi Jingping, in turn, set the task: the disease must be defeated in a short time.

In Britain at this time it is believed that the incidence figures are greatly underestimated. Last weekend, the MRC Center for Global Analysis of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London said the real number of people infected with the new virus could be more than a thousand people.

The resonance of yesterday's statement by Chinese doctors about the transmission of the virus from person to person is that earlier it was mostly an animal disease.

What virus are we dealing with

The coronavirus got its name because of its appearance: under a microscope, a "crown" of protruding proteins is visible on the surface of a virus particle. It can infect cats, dogs, bats and birds.

There are currently six known coronaviruses that can infect humans. Four are harmless: they cause symptoms of the common cold. The other two are the causative agent of the so-called SARS in 2003 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, SARS) and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus. Both cause serious respiratory illness and can be fatal.

According to a Russian media source at the Ministry of Health, the new coronavirus strain in China is similar to SARS. The source is allegedly bats. It was then passed on to tree-living mammals - palm civets (pictured below), from which it migrated to humans. This happened in the market where these animals were sold. The epidemiological investigation, which is being carried out by Chinese experts, also features the market.

Symptoms of human coronavirus infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath. That is, according to the first signs, it looks like ARVI or flu. It can also look like intestinal flu, accompanied by diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Prevention of coronavirus is the same as for flu. This memo was published by WHO:

  • wash hands with soap or wipe them with alcohol-containing wipes;
  • if possible, avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu symptoms;
  • boil meat and eggs well before eating;
  • avoid unprotected contact with wild animals and livestock.

The World Organization has not prepared any special recommendations for tourists visiting China, noting only that with similar symptoms, you need to see a doctor.

A patient with a coronavirus is prescribed therapy based on taking a wide range of antibacterial agents. Treatment takes place in an infectious diseases hospital. With the development of the disease - atypical pneumonia - antibiotics with an antiviral agent and glucocorticosteroids are prescribed.

Separately, Ukrainian Internet users are interested in the coronavirus, which can infect their dogs and cats.

Coronavirus in cats and dogs

This virus is common in nature and, for example, 80% of cats live with it. Once in the body, it enters the intestines, causes mild diarrhea, after which the cat recovers. But in 10% of animals, the virus mutates, leads to the ingress of fluid into the abdominal or chest cavity, due to which the cat dies.

Among other symptoms: the skin and mucous membranes become pale, the pupils may be uneven. There may be a lack of coordination of movements and paralysis.

At the last stage of the development of the disease, the cat begins to lose weight for no reason. At the same time, due to the accumulation of fluid, her belly increases and her temperature can rise.

At risk are young animals under the age of two years, most often kittens at the age of three to nine months. In dogs, the development of the disease is similar.

How are they already fighting the coronavirus

We are actively involved in the fight against coronavirus in the United States and Russia.

On January 20, it was reported that the United States began developing a vaccine against pneumonia of a new type. It is noted that clinical studies of a vaccine being developed may take several months.

Yesterday in Moscow they issued a statement that in February, Russian scientists will finish doing a rapid test to detect the 2019-nCoV coronavirus.

At Russian airports, passengers on the flight arriving from China are already being checked with thermal imagers to identify people with fever. However, without an express test, this measure does not allow the detection of those with the disease in the incubation period.

Similar measures to detect cases of viral pneumonia have already been introduced at Rome's Fiumicino International Airport. We have installed thermal scanners at airports in Malaysia.

Also, epidemiological control over passengers at airports in major American cities: New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco has been strengthened. Serious testing in Australia, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea.

Note that this is not the first outbreak of the coronavirus. In 2003, it spread to 29 countries and caused disease in more than 8.5 thousand people.
